Interesting ASRS report

I was just skimming through some asrs reports and came across this one. I was curious, is this the equivalent of "ratting" someone out in the airline industry? How do you handle flying with a captain that makes decisions like this? It was bad luck for that captain that an off duty check airman was on board.

WHEN WE CALLED FLT ATTENDANT TO CHK CABIN IS READY FOR TKOF, FLT ATTENDANT SAID SOMETHING ABOUT 'SURPRISE ME.' CONSIDERING 'PROFESSIONALISM' DEMONSTRATED BY OTHER CAPTS I FLY WITH, I DID NOT EXPECT THIS CAPT TO DO ANYTHING STUPID TO SATISFY THE REQUEST BY FLT ATTENDANT, WHICH I THOUGHT SHE WAS JOKING ANYWAY. SHORTLY AFTER TKOF, CAPT STARTED OFF WITH SLIGHTLY SHALLOWER CLB THAN NORMAL, BUT NOT TOO MUCH, THEN HE INITIATED AGGRESSIVE, RATHER SHARP TURN WITHIN 400 FT AGL. I KNEW THERE ARE NO OBSTRUCTIONS IN OUR WAY, BUT IT SURPRISED ME AND IT WAS SCARY FOR PAX, NOT TO MENTION, IT WAS VERY UNPROFESSIONAL AND UNCALLED FOR. AFTER THAT FLT, NON REVENUE CHK AIRMAN VISITED COCKPIT AND RAISED HIS CONCERN. I WAS VERY UPSET THAT THIS CAPT DID THAT MANEUVER. IN RETROSPECT, MAYBE I SHOULD HAVE BEEN MORE SENSITIVE TO ANY COMMENT WHICH MIGHT LEAD INTO UNPROFESSIONALISM. WE ALL EXPECT OTHER PLTS TO FLY SOP'S FOR SAFETY AND TO PREVENT SUCH SURPRISES. THIS EVENT MADE ME REALIZE THE IMPORTANCE OF STICKING WITH SOP EVEN MORE. DURING MY AVIATION CAREER, I AM SURE TO COME ACROSS OTHER CAPTS WITH 'RATHER COWBOY TYPE' ATTITUDE LIKE THIS CAPT. IN THAT TIME I WILL BE MORE PREPARED, AND A SIMPLE COMMENT LIKE 'YOU'RE NOT GOING TO DO SOMETHING STUPID ARE YOU?' MIGHT HAVE PREVENTED A SIT LIKE THIS. THIS TYPE OF PROB, IN MY OPINION, IS IN NO SMALL WAY ATTRIBUTED TO SENIORITY UPGRADE SYS, AS THIS SYS DOESN'T FILTER OUT PERSONS WITH LESS THAN IDEAL PERSONALITY.
Synopsis
EMB145 CAPT MADE A SHARP TURN 400 FT AGL AFTER TKOF IN RESPONSE TO THE CABIN ATTENDANT STATEMENT DURING PRETKOF 'SURPRISE ME.' THE FO WAS REALLY TAKEN ABACK AND DISAPPOINTED WITH THE UNPROFESSIONAL CONDUCT OF THE CAPT. AN OFF DUTY CHK AIRMAN CAME TO THE COCKPIT TO INQUIRE AS TO THE REASON FOR THE MANEUVER

Sounds to me like the F/O wanted to cover his ass for the maneuver so he filed an ASRS (maybe in addition to an ASAP?).

Are we surprised what equipment it was on?

From a dummy's perspective from outside the industry, why would the aircraft flown have any bearing on the actions that were reported (or the report itself)? I take it this is an intra-company or intra-community spear being thrown at the ERJ?

I'm guessing it's an implication about the professionalism of regional pilots.

When I was commuting (about 50/50 mainline and regional) I certainly saw childishness in cockpits of all sizes, but I'd be lying if I said it wasn't more common on RJ's. If there was a lot of weather on the trip to or from work, I definitely felt a little more comfortable on mainline.

maybe one should?

OK thanks for the brief Captain, yes I do have something to add, just one thing. Please don't be a dumbass. Now let's kick the tires and LIGHT the FIRES!

I hope not.

"If you see me doing something that you think is unsafe or nonstandard, I'm not trying to be cool - I'm probably making a mistake. Please say so."

This forum isn't for the outside perspective - regional guys are generally younger and don't have the years of experience or professionalism that comes with age - kind of like 3701. Just the incident itself, the way it was written in the oh • the check airman saw let me cover it up, to how he would prevent it next time, etc.

Not saying that all regional pilots fit in the category - but much like more residents do stupid stuff over attending doctors it's just an observation.

Not sure what you're getting at here. Did JC change its name to "Regional Airline Pilot Forum" and I missed it?

I am a military pilot and have no experience flying RJs -- I was trying to understand the reference.

You can be just as stupid with all that experience. Looks like some attitude issues at work on the part of the left seat...

Don't... Just don't do dumb crap like this in someone else's aircraft.

- It's not YOUR airplane and your company gets to decide how it's flown.
- While your sharp stick skills and aero-cocksmanship may impressive to other pilots and six year olds, your passengers aren't impressed.
- Get it out of your system. Most aircraft at some airlines have FOQA and a few seconds after you play "Flying Wallenza", the company already knows.
- NASA reports can help protect you from the FAA, but if the company hasn't pursued administrative action on the crew, I'd be hella surprised.

Again, it's not your aircraft and for all intents and purposes, probably not even your passengers.

Sounds similar to the famous Manzanillo Air Show incident several years back at a large regional. They may have been non-radar, but they weren't non-FOQA and the illustrations showed on the backdrops of the crew room computers for days to come.

Why people seek "glory" in the passenger airline business confounds me.

Reason #396 for why I don't believe in flow-throughs.
Can't like this enough. I have no idea why some airlines would take away the oppurtunity to filter out a few idiots that crept in.
