Insurance

So I got an email from AOPA saying my membership was about to expire. When I was going to renew it, it gave me an option for insurance. I assume that insurance, the AD&D, is primarily for renting somewhere else correct?

And while were on it tell me about the insurance that you personally have, besides being covered from where you work.

Not really sure if I want to get it or not.

AD&D insurance usually isn't worth it. It stands for Accidental death and dismemberment. If you have disability insurance and life insurance, you are covered with what AD&D insurance would cover.

I had Avemco's non-owned insurance plus the CFI coverage when I was instructing full time. I don't carry anything right now, but I only instruct in club planes that I'm covered by the club's insurance.

Did you ever have to use it? And how much coverage did you have?

I never needed it, therefore never used it. I carried $1M liability and about $10K hull. The hull wouldn't have covered me from subrogation, but it would have covered any deductible anyone had.

is there any site that really explains insurance, let alone aviation insurance? i have no idea what some of this means lol

A good insurance agent will spend the time teaching rather than selling. If they teach you well, you'll buy and be much happier with what you bought. Granted, such agents are rare. Maybe 1 in 10.

Some people around here will flip out at the name, but Dave Ramsey has a whole lesson in his course and a chapter or so in most of his books about life, health, car, home owners, etc. Aviation insurance is a little tougher to find a teacher, but it's not too difficult.

It seems like Avemco sent me a whole packet explaining what the different parts of the insurance are. Call them and see what they can do for you. I'd try to write a few paragraphs, but 1) I'm no expert, and 2) I don't have time to type it all out right now.

If you can't find anything, I'll try to write more later.

AOPA has legal insurance. Get it.
NAFI and SAFE both have good insurance plans for CFIs. Check them both out and see which one fits your needs.
