Instrument steep turns

Works good for a quickie course reversal if you get stuck doing a full procedure too. Hit the fix, 90 left steep turn, 270 right steep turn, bam, back on course just outside the FAF.

Man, doing 90/270 steep turns at 2000ft IMC...thou hast greater diameter balls than I, and possibly a smaller brain to suit.

I don't imagine is necessarily has to be steep. A regular, standard-rate, 90/270 should work too, while being a little less rushed. Just a technique, as either would work.

For a proficient IFR pilot it should be just another day at the office. I wouldn't do it right now, and I USUALLY did the 90/270 turn at a standard rate, but when I was instructing IFR all the time I could and occasionally did do the procedure turn as a steep turn.

I see a lot of student not using trim and fighting the plane the whole maneuver. Then I demonstrate how you can basically add about 100 RPM, pitch up about 5 degrees, and give it two full turns on the trim. You could sit there all day with your hands off the yoke and the plane will do the steep turn for you.
