Instrument oral questions

Let's have them. . .and don't go turning to your instrument oral exam guide.

I want to know some that are not in the handy dandy booklets.

:)

Book does a good job...

but what kind of airplane are you doing your IR in?
I ask that because sometimes the examiner will actually relate some instrument specific questions towards you regarding whats in the airplane.

For example the plane i flew for my IR had a flux gate compass and an RMI so I got drilled on the RMI and Flux.

Just something to think about that isnt really covered in the book.

Here is one since I don't feel like thinking at the moment:

-What type of circumstances must we have to file an alternate? (Looking for more items than the 1-2-3 rule. What types of weather systems must an airport have, etc....)

-If we go IFR into IMC and our Attitude Indicator and gyro instruments fail, must we get immediately out of IMC since our aircraft is no longer IFR rated (equipment wise - not necessarily if it is the smart thing to do, but more-so are we required to)?

If you lose comms and are going to arrive at your destination early, what do you do? Do you hold? If so where?

-Jason

Here are some I had on my oral

1. If your static ports become blocked, will your airspeed indicator be accurate at that same altitude, what about if you ascend 2000 feet? will it be accurate then? if not, how will it be inaccurate, and how much?

2. You at 5,500 (indicated) feet with an altimeter setting of 28.85 (corrected to Sea level pressure, not station pressure) temperature is 65 F. What is Density Altitude using only a calculator, no E6B's :)

3. Temperature changes ___ C per thousand feet (standard conditions)

4. Dew point changes ___C per thousand feet (standard conditions)

5. Temperature and dew point comes together at a rate of ___C or ___ F per thousand feet. (standard conditions)

6. Three stages of a thunderstorms

7. Two conditions you need to have to get icing.

8. Three conditions that determine how much icing you will get.

9. Whats the Definitions of: Touch Down Zone, Ceiling, Visibility

10. How do we know when Jepps charts are expired, (or NOAS charts if you use them)

If you lose comms and are going to arrive at your destination early, what do you do? Do you hold? If so where?

...and to add to that:

What if our clearance limit isn't the airport that is our real destination? How does that affect what will you do in a Comm. Failure? When would we want to leave that clearance limit and where would we go?

Phew.. I'm just sparking with questions.

Compass Turns:

-Vacuum system is gone so we must rely on the compass: We are turning from South to North on the compass, what will the compass do as we start the turn and what will it do throughout the turn? Also, same thing as we turn from North to South and what headings will the compass have no errors at (Not accelerating or decelerating)?

-Any errors at all with the compass on East and West headings?

-Our static systems and our alt. static system take a dump in flight, do we have something else we can do? If so, what is it?

-Our electrical system goes off in flight, will any of our instruments be affected? If so, which ones?

-What are the various speed and time restrictions on the holding legs with regard to holding patterns at different altitudes?

-What are the different types of VORs and what is their usuable ranges? Any VOR errors?

-What is a HIWAS? Where is broadcast from? What does a HIWAS consist of?

Can you join a DME arc at any portion?

What type of obstacle clearance is given during the initial, intermediate, and final approach segments of an approach?

Is it legal to forego a procedure turn and if so, what allows you to do such?

What is required to fly in class B under IFR?

What are the maximum holding speeds at at what altitudes?

How accurate is a VOR?

At the OM, what is the typical distance from the threshold? Height? What about the MM?

-If we go IFR into IMC and our Attitude Indicator and gyro instruments fail, must we get immediately out of IMC since our aircraft is no longer IFR rated (equipment wise - not necessarily if it is the smart thing to do, but more-so are we required to)?

Yes, you are. FAR 91.13.

Some of these might be in the book, and might have been said... so I am sorry for that...

If i think of anymore ill let you know!

IFR in class G airspace.

Cruise altitudes: West = even thousands, East = odd thousands
Flight plan required: no
Clearence required: no

I still think the examiner was crazy on that, but I guess uncontrolled is just that, uncontrolled.

When you are looking at the weather for your destination airport, what do you consider for ceiling and visibility? What is the lowest ceiling and visibility value forcasted for the destination that you would consider that you should be able to see the runway at DH or MDA?

and where do you find that information?

How about posting the answers to some of these questions??

I just started my instrument (2 flights) and I have only been reading the Instrument Flying Handbook, and it is boring and not full of enough info! I ordered the Jepp book as I think that will have a lot more info. Anyway, I would love to hear the answers to these questions. Many of them I know, but some of them are good questions that I would like to know the answer to.
