Global airfreight demand growth led by Asia Pacific

IATA’s traffic results for November 2009 show global airfreight demand was up 9.5 per cent over November 2008. However this was an exaggerated improvement due to the sharp fall in demand experienced during the second half of 2008.

Demand is 20 per cent better than the low point in December 2008, but still 10 per cent below the peak levels seen in early 2008. Comparing to October (and adjusting for seasonality), freight demand grew by 4.7 per cent, largely on the strength of markets connected to Asia Pacific.

The bulk of the airfreight markets connect Asia. The 14.5 per cent growth in freight demand for Asia Pacific’s carriers is linked to the success of stimulus packages in driving industrial output and broader economic recovery within the region.

Carriers in other regions also saw strong growth in freight as follows: Africa (8.1 per cent), Latin America (17.5 per cent), Middle East (21.4 per cent) and North America (13.6 per cent).

European carriers were the only group to post a drop in traffic, recording a 5.6 per cent fall in demand. This reflects the lingering economic malaise in the region.

Demand continues to improve, but we still have a lot of ground still to recover. We cannot anticipate any significant improvement in yields in the coming months. So, conserving cash, controlling costs and carefully matching capacity to demand remain at the keys to survival,” said Giovanni Bisignani, IATA’s director general and chief executive officer.

Emphasis mine...

It depends if your company decides it wants to get into the feeder freight game full on or not really. Even with this good news, UPS was thinking of furloughing a short time ago.

"The company" has been pretty consistent through the bad times. There's even been small amounts of growth here and there. I'm thinking that there will be more good to come.

Here's the deal though, instead of double digit year-over-year losses, it has stablized.

Things are starting to move. It will take a while to get down to the feeder level I'm sure, but volumes are exceeding capacities right now.

I'm sure there will be some fits and spurts, but it's starting.

FWIW, apparently Evergreen is looking to hire about 40 FOs this year. I believe they got another DreamLifter coming next month and some 744s.

If it comes (assuming if it every happens), will you take it?
Depends on where it would end up being based.

I'm not moving only to have my base close 3 weeks after my checkride. BKL would be nice...if that run sticks around.

well if you base anything on aaww's performance (thank's btw) something good has to be coming.

Hopefully a CBA that has adequate compensation and maintains my decent QoL.

And, of course, work for everybody.

Oh, and a bangin' scope, playa

A little birdy told me that a certain 135 op (not mine) is bidding on some new runs out west. Is that a light at the end of the tunnel, or just a train?

Couldn't it be both? I mean, a train would have a light on it... and it would be at the end of the tunnel, until it ran you over.

Unless you were standing at the other end of the tunnel...then it would still be at the end of the tunnel.

...or the beginning.

...depending on who you ask.

I'm a "Pour more in the glass" kinda guy.

Well, conceivably, this could mean that yet another route is being downsized to a "contractor". That would be a train.

It could mean that volume is up. That would be a light.

It probably means that one hardscrabble 135 is going to undercut another hardscrabble 135 and "Tuk R Jubz!". That would be the glass isn't full enough.
