individual courses

I have decided on attending Flight Safety Academy. However, I was thinking about taking the courses individually(already have my private certificate). I am in a position to save some money and can possibly pay for the time building and an instrument rating and take out a loan for the commercial single engine, CFI, and multiengine ratings. Also I was wondering if someone got a commercial single engine(to instruct) is it required that you get a commercial multi.
Any help would be appreciated!!

FSI initial training is divided up into 5 steps:
1. Private Single
2. Cross country time building and commercial maneuvers
3. Private Multi-Engine
4. Instrument Rating (in the multi)
- 4A. Basic Attitude Instrument Skills & Intercepting and Tracking
- 4B. Instrument Approaches
5. Commercial Multi-Engine

After step 5, you do a Single Engine Commercial Add On rating to get Commercial Single Engine privledges. Then it is off to do the CFI ratings.

If you have enough hours, you can skip step 1&2, and go right into the private multi-engine course. If you do this, the only change is that step 5 will be a part 61 checkride with an examiner. If you complete step 2 at FSI, step 5 is a regular 141 checkride with a FSI check airman.

It is also possible to do everything in the single engine, and do a multi-engine commercial add on at the end, but very few do this.

If you want to work at FSI, you will have to do all 3 CFI ratings eventually, but you only need to have your initial CFI in the single to interview. You will need to complete the CFII before being standardized (initial training before being given students). Most don't complete their MEI until after they are working as instructors.

FSI is very flexible, as are the other schools, and they will customize a course of training for you, depending on your needs. So, if you already have your instrument rating, this can also be accomodated. I even had 2 students that only came to FSI for their CFI ratings.

Unless you have a lot of hours I'd go ahead and do step 2-5 part141, that way you only need 160hrs actual flight time to get your comerical licence vs 250 part 61. That way you save money in the long run.
