Incentive plans for you Pro pilots...?

From the course syllabus: “Select Three different incentive plans (you may select individual plans, group plans, or a combination) list the pros and cons for each plan. For a position that you envision for yourself in five years, which of these three plans would be most appropriate? Explain your answer”.

I have to write a stupid little paper for a checkpoint in a Human Resource Management class I am taking. It’s regarding incentive plans for a position that I envision being in 5 years. Obviously, I see my-self at an Airline. However, I don’t know how your incentive plans work if any. What types on incentive planes are you guys receiving, and would you mind explaining to me how they work. No, I am not asking to do my homework; I just can’t find anything on the net. Do you receive bonuses for saving gas, arriving early, personal effectiveness, leadership qualities etc… ? I don’t see how there could be group plans really, but if any of you don’t mind sharing with me how it works I would appreciate it ton! Thanks in advance.

Re: Insentive plans for you Pro pilots...?

D) none of the above.

The only incentive plans here are for people to apply and get hired.

Re: Insentive plans for you Pro pilots...?

ExpressJet has a profit sharing plan to entice pilots to adhere to a variety of cost-saving measures such as climb/descent profiles, single-engine taxi, APU usage, and on-time performance. We're given a yearly profit sharing check which is vurrah vurrah nice.

There is also a perfect attendance reward program about which I know next to nothing since I've never had perfect attendance. Sour grapes, you understand.

See, either one of those would go a LOOOONG way to improving management-labor relations here. The CSAs and rampers get incentives for on-time performance, but the FAs and pilots don't get anything.

Keep it slow, and on two engine taxi, and take your time getting to the gate.

Funny how those who unload the bus, and load the bus, and deal with the cranky customers get a hand out. While the bus drivers, and bus alley way protectors don't get anything. . .

Sad.

Even then, that nets us nothing other than arriving late and ticking off the passengers to the point where they might fly another airline. We get paid trip values, not block. So really, the only incentive we have is to be early and get paid a little more. Then we pay for that next year when the new trip values come out b/c the average time the trip takes has gone down.

Besides, we do that and management gets the "See! Those greedy pilots are taking away your on-time bonus checks!" card.

Re: Insentive plans for you Pro pilots...?

True, but if management plays that card. . .I'd whip out the "We don't have it, no one needs to have it" card. Especially if one works for an airline that is trying to save costs.

Then again, I'm one hell of a cynic when it comes to giving money to people, and not giving it to another group of people.

All or none in my opinion.

Re: Insentive plans for you Pro pilots...?

Ehh, pay me lots of money, give me plenty of time off to spend it, and don't go all ape caca when I get a cold.

That's about all I look at.

Profit-sharing is a joke because with some simple legal bookkeeping tricks, you can make *less* of a profit and issue lower profit sharing checks.

Get your employees to take less pay and promise profit sharing and you've got a double-win on the labor costs side.

Re: Insentive plans for you Pro pilots...?

As opposed to Skywest's "Marsupial Department"? :) :sarcasm:

We just came out with a fuel savings program here and it is making a huge difference. Hopefully, this will help our year end bonuses.

Don't get me started! That's exactly what our management wants us to swallow during the new contract negotiations right now...

...

What do you mean by "trip values"? Your scheduled duty time?

You are paid the scheduled block time regardless of the actual flight time. If you fly it less than block you win. If you get a delay and the flight takes longer than planned you just worked the extra time for free.

Re: Insentive plans for you Pro pilots...?

That's why at SkyWest it's the People Department! Very original...

...err... more like this: You need to have an HR degree to be a VP of HR, SA does not have said degree so they renamed the department to she could have her cozy little office in SGU.
