In Flight Porn? A little "creative"

Bless the cash-strapped airlines, who may soon allow your seatmate to enjoy Internet pornography in-flight.

Blame it on fuel costs.

American Airlines (AMR) has expanded the availability of Internet access on non-stop flights connecting New York with Los Angeles, San Francisco and Miami.

For $12.95, American Airlines customers can browse the Internet and check e-mail from their seats.

In-flight Web surfing is part of the airline industry’s ongoing effort to develop new sources of revenue in response to rising fuel costs. So far, efforts to boost revenue have included new fees for extra bags checked and charges for in-flight snacks.

If American’s expanded Internet service is a money-maker, you can bet competitors will soon copy it. Who knows, maybe United Airlines (UAUA), Delta (DAL) and JetBlue (JBLU) will offer a similar service in the future. American tested in-flight Internet access on 2 flights in June.

In-flight Web surfing is a good idea - until the pervert in the aisle seat clicks to a porno site and kids nearby ask their parents what’s going on. American Airlines won’t filter the Internet, and says current policies governing unruly passengers will be applied to bozos sniffing around naughty Web sites.

Good luck with that.

You can bet that someone will complain about just about everything available on the Internet. Sports Illustrated and the bikini babes? Shocking! Hot cars? Evil carbon footprint! Cats? Just the thought of felines is bound to trigger an allergic reaction in someone. A religious Web site? Hah - the mug in seat 15A is almost certain to argue that there’s a Constitutional separation between church and airline, or ought to be.

There’s also the problem of confidential e-mail, both personal and corporate. After you read an intimate note over Kansas, a bumptious seatmate is bound to say, “Hey buddy, I can help.”

All this may turn flight attendants into kindergarten teachers, soothing and cajoling passengers - or telling those in a snit to put a sock in it.

This is guaranteed to beat the crummy in-flight movie for entertainment value - at least for the first thousand miles.

In the word's of the worlds best Pilot Glenn Quagmire, Giggity Giggity goo!Wait what if children get porn access that can be a law suite for the airline.

It will be interesting to watch things unfold as WiFi access is rolled out. Once a carrier starts blocking access to certain sites, it will quickly spiral out of control as the article mentioned with people calling many sites 'unsafe' for viewing in the air.

Two seemingly conflicting thoughts worth mentioning...

1) Common sense would dictate to keep one's more 'sensitive' internet surfing private and behind closed doors

2) Why are others on the airplane even bothering snooping around what is on the others persons screen?

How is that even related to internet? What if someone brings a dirty magazine? Should someone be searching all carry ons for them and preventing them from getting on board? Or just these 'special' pictures that we took while on vacation... Should all pictures carried on board be censored too?

Just another reason why pornographic websites should have the ".XXX" and not be allow ".com" It would make filtering so much easier. We all know right now that adult websites have names that could easily be assumed to be safe.

Whitehouse dot com anyone? Haha

Nah, wouldn't make a difference at all. Whose going to tell bighoohahs.com that he's got to change it to bighoohahs.xxx? How do you enforce that? You can't.

Besides "pornography" has a wide swath of definitions as well. In some cultures, your avatar may be deemed pornographic! Fo reals!

F/As have been battling printed porn for decades.......

In 7 years, I never had to deal with someone being indiscrete with a X-rated magazine. Many F/As have. Having porn available on a screen is no different than having porn available in a magazine form. The incidents will be treated the same. Yes, you can and WILL be asked (and must comply with the request) to put it away. Not that you can't have it, of course you can. Just keep it to yourself and don't go showing it around! Common sense.

If someone sitting alone in a row of seats is looking at playboy.com, who cares? Just like if someone is reading Playboy magazine sitting quietly with the pictures facing them and not showing it around to everyone. No big deal.

Quite honestly the thought of VOIPs being un-restricted scares me FAR more than non-filtered porn sites........

Keep cell phones or computer-phone conversations OFF THE PLANES! I guarantee phone conversations would cause far more inflight disturbance than porn!

Whose going to tell bighoohahs.com that he's got to change it to bighoohahs.xxx? !

Man, that's my favorite website!

This one time............on crew rest.....

And old lady sits next to me and says, "Say sonny, you look like a player. How'd you like to see my my breasts?"

Sure, I replied.

So she hiked up her skirt.

Ba dum!

Thanks.... I'll be here all week!

I never quite understood why they sell porn at the airport...but obviously people buy it or they wouldn't sell it.

Couple years ago I'm watching "Brotherhood Of The Wolf" on my laptop. It's subtitled. Turn around and there are 5-6 people leaning over to watch it, too. Slightly embarrassing as there were one or two steamy Monica Belluci scenes...

You raise a good point here. The noise/privacy issues aside, VoIP calls are and will be bandwidth hogs. If they're smart, they'll block voice packets and only allow HTTP and HTTPS traffic - maybe some VPN stuff, too.

Curious about the implementation now, though.

I am all for unfiltered Internet access on flights but has the security risks been fully assessed? One would also be able to disrupt the network of wi-fi computers on the plane as well.

I never understood that either, and some of it is hardcore. Funny they banned all porn from being sold at military bases at least 10 years ago, but you can buy it at a commercial airport:crazy:

...

That's what I expected. It's just a new media which needs to be dealt with in the same way. The article gives the impression (or at least gave it to me) that the introduction of internet access on board will be source of serious problems and I don't really think that it will be that much of a change.

Because we want to protect our soldiers from filthy pornography! ;) :sarcasm:

The author of the article is a ######bag.

Someone needs to hit him over the head with a 2x4 and maybe some sense will be knocked into him.

In flight WiFi is a good idea. It gives people a way to kill time and it keeps them occupied.

How is allowing customers access to the web any different than what they have access to now? Last time I was in an airport (read: yesterday) I saw plenty of magazines with black cellophane over their covers. Again this is just more of the same old same old, much ado about nothing.

shall we stop bringing magazines too?

because the pervert sitting next to me could have brought a porn magazine

jesus. is EVERYONE smarter than the media?
