In case anyone was curious...

If any of you remember how I was panicking a few weeks ago over the ERAU/Private Loan issue, here's what has happened since then:

Two days before I was to arrive at the Embry-Riddle Prescott campus, my sister informed me she was not going to get the new job at my old college that would be able to help pay my monthly tuition payments of approximately $1800. She was convinced for about a month that she had the job, but it turned out they hired someone else and tried to trick her into still teaching classes anyway. I have no idea how that worked out, but we both agreed that the way the administration handled this was very underhanded (longer story than this).

So it was Monday and I had a bill of $1800 due on Friday. $1810.42, to be exact. This is for the flex-payment option I had set up with Sallie Mae Services to make ERAU's total cost not so harsh. I called my father. He had told me he couldn't co-sign for a loan about a month earlier as he was refinancing his car and his home. I had tried applying for other loans both myself and with other co-signers all summer, with no luck. My dad, seeing that this was my last hope, co-signed for a loan. He was denied. I then contacted my financial aid counselor at ERAU and let her know what was going on. I asked if I had any other options. I had nothing left. I asked about withdrawal procedures, withdrew, and carried on. On Friday, though, I remembered my bill was due for the Sallie Mae payment. I thought ERAU had cancelled the plan along with everything else, but such was not the case. Subsequently there came many days calling my bank and Sallie Mae. Sallie Mae was able to cancel my plan but could do nothing about the August payment since it was already processing. I had my bank put three stop payments on the bill, including a stop payment that was all electronic except for the physical destruction of my debit card! Even after all of that, my available balance was near the -2000 range! That was quite a sight! I called around again in a panic and ERAU took responsibility, and is in the process of refunding me.

Hey, I almost pulled it all off and went to ERAU! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif But due to the sudden circumstances, I just couldn't afford it. That was a crazy line of circumstances, too.

All the while, I had never even looked at Arizona State University's flight program. After playing around with a calculator for quite some time, it looks like I can do it. Flight training is inherently expensive, but if I use the academic environment to my advantage and garner institutional grants and scholarships, I may not even have to pay anything back after all is said and done!

So I'm in the process of applying to ASU, and should start my first classes in January. I'll keep you guys updated! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/spin2.gif

Good luck at ASU....it was probably for the best anyway, no need to rack up all that debt at Riddle if you can go to ASU and come out debt free. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Best of luck to you. ERAU is overrated anyways. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Yes, I understand the irony seeing as how I'm in my 4th year.../ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Ditto what RiddlePilot said. I was gonna go to the DAB campus, but there was no way I could afford it. I withdrew about two weeks before classes started. ASU has a good program (MissedApproach on here is in it), and I might even see ya swapping airplanes b/w ASU and MAPD.

Good luck to ya, keep it up, when you get your butt up in the sky, it will make it taste that much
sweeter...

And we all know it will be that much sweeter when you finally get up in the air. Plus, you can always work on your private ticket on the side before you get there.

Sorry about you not being able to attend ERAU Cristl... but sometimes I think there are circumstances out there that point us in a totally new direction and usually, it's for the better! Glad to see your being proactive about it and not crying in spilt financial milk!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

[/ QUOTE ]Some people do manage. If you take initiative scholarships and grants are relatively easy to come by here.

If you have any questions or want me to show you around ASU and the flight line just drop me a PM.
