IFR rating...Self study and written prep

To all CFIs,

I'm a private pilot (who is getting back 'up' after 9 years) looking to get my instrument rating. I am looking for the best self study program and written prep for the IR. I want to be totally prepared for the knowledge test before I begin all flight/ground training to be as prepared as I possibly can for the challenge of obtaining the IR.

Basically I'm looking for anything I can listen to, watch, or read that enhances my flight training from weather to navigation.

I would love to hear what you suggest to your students!

Thanks!
Bubba

Gleim did me good for the Pvt......I really liked it for the written. The faa books I have and read, twice. Good info in both.

I've heard that Jeppesen has some good computer based stuff for instrument flying and for the written test as well. Any thoughts?

The reason I always tell people to go to the FAA publications is simple: the PTS is based them.

I haven't used any computer based Jepp stuff, but I have the DVD's and while they aren't bad, the Sportys IFR DVD set is WAY better.

Gleim or Jeppguides for the writtens and then reference the FAA AFH, IFH and PHAK for the Practical Test.

Like Bdhill said, the PTS is based off them. Know them well.

I used the Cessna IFR pilot kit (CD's +book), done by the Kings, then followed up with Gleim book for the test prep.

People will say the Kings are boring, but the videos are actually pretty good, they cover the prep/theory and then do inflight videos of the approaches so you can see how it works out for real.

I agree that the Kings cover the information well, but as I have said before:

I get transfixed on Martha's Afro, wondering what in God's name possesses a woman to wear her hair like that.

Then I get weirded out by John's lazy eye reading the Que cards:insane:

No doubt about the Kings. I think they should throw the blonde chick in a little more gratuitously for the bonus. Although, since those videos were shot like 20 years ago, I just hope that she hasn't went the Tanya Harding route with the weight. One must have hope.
