If a passenger hands you a note as they board....

Very cool. I'm sure most, if not all of us are not in this for recognition of any sort but it's always nice to receive a kind word or a compliment from our passengers.

That actually is pretty cool. I have had passengers personally thank me a few times with my previous job (135 pax charter), although verbally, never with a note.

When I worked 91 I've gotten thank you notes/cards from passengers, it was always kind of nice. Now at the airlines I'm honestly surprised at how much thanks we do get. I've stood in the galley while the people deplane and many times, especially in bad weather, I get "thank you so much" and "great job", "thanks for the safe trip" comments from pax. I figured in 121 people just angrily got off the airplane, but it's nice to see the flight crews get that!

I'd hope she was hot. Then I'd say "I'd like to show you my appreciation for you being such a sweetheart, can I take you to dinner?"

Jokes aside, I always make an effort to make eye contact with the flight crew, pilots or FAs or who ever is by the door and say thank you. Its just common courtesy.

I've gotten a few thank you notes. The coolest was on Christmas last year, a little 5 year old girl stopped by with a note thanking all of us for flying on the Holiday so she and her family could get to where they wanted to be. She also gave us all $5 walmart gift cards.

That's awesome!

I don't mind standing up front and saying hello/goodbye. In fact, on the rare occasions I did DCI flying on the Brasilia, there was sufficient time to say "hi" and "bye" after completing the mandatory safety-related duties, as the turn timeline was that much longer. This is a people business.

This said, I've collected, either on the 175 or on the Brasilia:
  • fistbumps
  • handshakes
  • high-fives from kids (seriously awesome, because they think flying is as cool as I think it is, if not cooler)
  • high-fives from not kids
  • hugs
I'll spend an extra minute on bathroom breaks talking to Row 1, too. (It's a physiological need - that is, I need to stretch my legs.)

My favorite thing so far in this theme was a Japanese boy and his mother shown into the cockpit doorway after landing by the flight attendant.

She motioned for him to step in and we scooted our bags out of the way.

He produced two origami cranes from his pocket that she had helped him make during the flight to Detroit.

We wished them a pleasant flight onward to Nagoya and they of course grinned and bowed and thanked us again.

What a difference in cultures.

I am flying a family this week for the first time in a year. The 135 company managing the plane was not worth the effort so I quit let my currency lapse. They needed me so I am flying them part 91 this week.
On day 1 I am loading the luggage and felt and felt arms around my waist. The 8 year old son hugged me and said I missed you. It feels nice to be appreciated and recognized for good service. I'd hate to have to hug every passenger on a 737, but if I could pick and choose.....

I read this more as a plea for compassion from the pilot (who may or may not be suffering from depression) rather than a note of appreciation.

She is stating that she has a life and, no matter what's going on in your(pilot's) life, please get me home safe.

Initially I shared your feeling, but despite this thread's title, the note reads more as if it were written in flight and given to the pilots while deplaning.

Got this last Christmas......

I rarely got that at my last job. Except for the Japanese passengers who always loved to chat us up and take our pictures.

I feel much more appreciated now and it make life quite a bit better.

I had a pax say, "thanks for not crashing" a few days before the Germanwings crash. The CA and I looked at each other in amazement. The things some people say. But all kidding aside, it's always nice to get a compliment or to see a kid sound asleep after it was your leg landing.
