I'd be #29 at UPS

We carry on the Grand Game, sir! On the shoulders of (lazy) Giants! *yawn*
I almost never picked up opentime or flew JA’s. The number of opentime/JA trips I did over my career could’ve been counted on one hand. I always believed if you couldn’t live well on baseline senior f/o or Captain’s pay at UPS then you really needed to reevaluate your lifestyle. Heck, the last 5 years I didn’t even want to fly my scheduled trips. There were times during the week of turns I’d get displaced 3 out of 4 days and get a little pissed when I had to fly the one day. I say that somewhat tongue in cheek but I was all about working the least amount for the most money.

This seems to be the UPS motto. I was rarely in position to do a JA. I remember living in Spokane and they REALLY needed a Capt in Seattle and asked how fast I could get there. 4 hours. They said GO. But I checked the open time two or three times a day looking for that perfect trip on the west coast. I didn't pick that many up. Maybe one every other pay period. When I did 2 week on reserve in ONT and didn't work much I picked up more cause it was easy to deconflict during two weeks off.

I think I speak for most that you should ban any Alaska Airlines talk. How almost every thread turns into Alaska Thunderdome baffles the mind.

It’s amazing to me in society how quickly people now want the ban hammer thrown at the first sign of anything even remotely considered offensive.

There were times my shop did stuff for no rhyme or reason. This happened to me several times. I had a 2-day trip on days A, B. Staffing looks good on days A, B. All of a sudden a 2-day drops onto the same A, B days at *premium.* So I drop my straight pay 2-day and pickup that 2-day at premium.

Another routine trick I’d do is if a premium popped up on my days off, I would add it, and then drop an equivalent trip later in the month I had at straight pay. Essentially, same days worked overall for the month but higher pay.

Nothing to do with not being able to live on base salary, just making smart moves to make more money for the same amount of days worked overall in a month.
