IAP SYMBOL

Signifies that the VOR is a lot further away than the chart makes it look like.

Ever seen a floating VOR? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

To be totally honest I don't have a clue but I would venture a guess that the VOR maybe located further out than what is pictured on the approach plate.. so they just inserted one of those fancy extension symbols ??

It means "distance not to scale". it just means that the navaid is 30.8 miles away, so, although it is depicted on the approach plate, it is not actually located where it is depicted. For future reference, you can look at page G1 in the front pages of your plates and that has most of the symbols you'll need to know-- good luck with your approaches!

...and get some Jepps!

If you've got $100 to rent a Cessna for an hour, you certainly can spring for a Jepp subscription.

Agreed. NACO is evil. Eeeeeevil.

Jepps are great... until you need to do a long cross country and you don't want to fork over $40.00 for every little area you want to fly to. Definitely get some Jepps for the local area you want to fly, but also become comfortable with NOS... you'll find knowing NOS comes in handy when you don't want to spend a lot of money on plates when going to someplace once... and also, if you ever get stuck somewhere without your charts, chances are NOS are the only one's you'll be able to buy (been there, done that!)

Which is why tomorrow I plan on buying the FL Jepp plates, and NOS for MS/AL/TN. That's right, guess who's NOT driving 14 hours from ORL-MEM this weekend. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

thanks guys.....yeah, ive seen that symbol a million times but never thought about what it meant. im headed down to duck this weekend.....a little vacation so to speak.

ok, so i just ordered two express packs for the mid-atlantic and the southeast for my trip. ill let you know what i think, dont have alot of experience with jepp plates...do you all really think they are that much better? i guess ill be the judge of that soon enough.

In ground school, this lady came in and handed me like $600 worth of Jeppesen plates. This being at a fairly cheap-skate type airline which could have supplied me with loose NOS plates for less tha $100. So what is the deal with using Jeppesen plates?

They're a H E double hockey sticks of a lot easier to use.

And bottom line is since they're easier to use, they're safer, more predictable and easier to see in low visibility conditions.

Get safe. Get Jepps. Aight?! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bandit.gif

Troof, though they're expensive as all hell when you're poor. Especially when they expire a day before your double-eye ride. Meh! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Also when you live right on the border of a couple of the subscription areas and need to buy three different ones! With the weather up here I don't fly enough to be able to afford that!

Much like everybody else I prefer Jepps....but only when somebody else is paying!

Also have you ever seen the low-enroute for the New York area? There is so much clutter on there that you can't hardly use it. It might as well be written in sandscrit! The gov't chart scaling is much better for this area.

That's why Jepp gives you the area chart!!

Personally, I love the Jepp charts. Once I started using them, I didn't go back. There's nothing like hitting 5 airports in the local area because it's chart day and nobody seems to want to carry Louisiana charts, and you reallly wanted to have some fresh gumbo tonight..... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

True...but not if you buy the express packs they don't....I've tried. They told me I had to have the subscription service. After that I gave up. It would have cost too much money in the long run, plus none of my students buy them so I just wanted to avoid the confusion of me using Jepp's and them using something different.

I switch back and forth between Jepp and NOS... NOS is easier to find and cheaper, but Jepp's are definitely nicer. I have, however, never felt that I was putting myself at risk using NOS plates. Once you get used to them they're perfectly fine, and in my opinion, safe to use.

Want to know a trick? Buy the Express Subscription....;)

It's just like the standard airway manual service, except you get express packs. No revisions every 56 days...a whole new set!!!! You throw the old away, and put the new in!! And you still get the update every 28 days. Cost? Less than the standard service....and less than buying a new express package each cycle!!

All this, and if you're a first time subscriber, you can call and get 25% off your subscription!

Not a bad deal!!

Except that the stupid IR written tests you on the NACO charts, NOT the Jeppesen! After putting in much effort to learn the Jepps, I'm STILL having to learn to hate the NACO stuff. I dislike the NACO enroute charts in particular.
