I Need Help Shipping a Body. (For Burial.)

Seriously, now. Some people I know are hosting a fundraiser to help a local family who just lost a loved one. The departed's wish was to be laid to rest in Hawaii. We're all pitching in to help any way we can.

If anybody knows anything about this, and transporting the deceased, it'd be appreciated. I'm trying to find out what (if any) strings I can pull to help these people out.

Any information would be appreciated.

(And I know what you're thinking- no, I didn't whack anybody. This is a serious request.)

Have you called any medical transport companies in the area for leads? Also check the airlines for their HR procedures. When I worked ramp for a contractor we did a lot of HRs for US Air

I hadn't even thought that far into it. I've called Fedex and am trying to work things with my own company. I know we ship the remains of soldiers home under escort. I'm just not sure if they'd do it for civilians or not.

Ask only someone you trust completely, and delete this post IMMEDIATELY.

Seriously, a funeral home will be required unless the deceased has been cremated. To keep costs down you may want to get two or three bids, and let them know that the family is asking for financial help.

... why delete this post? I'm not going to attempt anything illegal or inappropriate. I'm just trying to find out what can be done.

I don't think he is folding the body up and putting it in a suitcase.

I'm throwing this out there but unless they have direct ties to Hawaii and/or specific permission, you can't just send a body there for burial. That having been stated; the airlines will handle any request for this. The body will have to be prepared by an embalmer that complies with "flight requirements"

I believe the deceased was born in Hawaii, I'm not privy to all the finer details. I just thought I'd pitch in with any information I could, and maybe help the family mitigate costs.

I'd think local cremation and shipping some ashes USPS would be the obvious option if finances are a problem. I realize that's not an option for everyone, but just in case someone overlooked it.

A practical solution, yes, but there may be other considerations. My Dad insisted he be cremated because he thought burying his entire corpse was a waste of space. He was a pragmatist to the end.

I was just throwing it out there; I had an Aunt that had a similar request...

drunkenbeagle psoted Delta's prices....they seem pretty resonable.

Send me a PM, I'll kick in and help out....

Check with Delta as well.

They, apparently, transport more remains than anyone else in the business.

I know Southwest ships civilian HRs. Not sure if it would help getting to the west coast. I can talk to some friends still there if you'd like to see what they could arrange.

If you buy a cemetery plot, why would Hawaii care?
I'm not sure you CAN just buy a plot unless you have a connection to the island. I think it's a space-preservation step that the State takes.
I had an Aunt that wanted to be buried there. It took her a year+ to get the arrangements completed (glad she planned ahead). She had to prove she had a tie to the State. The ONLY reason she was approved is because she gained her U.S. citizenship there when she transition the islands from the Philipines towards the end of WWII. [of course things may have changed, this was 10 years ago]

Also, employee discounts on freight can be substantial. I think Fedex was around 75% off last time I checked. I would ask your employer.

Fedex informed me that they transport blood and organs for medical support, but not remains. My employer told me they could offer no additional assistance unless the deceased was a specific member of my own family.
