I made my decision

I am doing the allatp 90 days fast track course for $49,999 in PHX!! I have done a lot research and find this to be a good choice. I have 100hrs flight time, 30hrs PIC/Cross country. I will gradate with 350+hrs total time, 150 which is multi cross country. And all my ratings but ATP… I am planning on going first part of 2008, by then I will have bachelors in business management all this by the time I am 26… I am so excited right now!!

What do some of you pros. Think about Allatp?? Likes dislikes, the good, the bad, and the ugly..

ATP is $50k now?!?! That's just obscene, given that it was only $28k just a few years ago.

Soon to be another PHX JC'er.....good times.

Its that or the 65k that Flight Center of Salt Lake is asking, or go the slowwww route with UVSC which is about the same cost. Is there somewhere cheaper, which has the REP, ratings, flight time, and experience guaranteed?

And if gas prices weren’t such an anal probe I am sure it would be cheaper, hell when I started flying in 98’ it cost me 55 an hour to rent a C152, and now its between 95 and 120$

Yeah, I was pretty geared up to go to ATP back then they were 32k. That was a pretty good deal. Now, not so much.

Well, let's see... just three months pre-Katrina (2005) regular unleaded was down to just over a dollar a gallon (using prices in Georgia, my home state). Now it's up to almost three bucks a gallon.

Seems to me we're lucky that it didn't go from $28k to $84k!!!!

Fuel prices are going to affect the cost of everything--even the Cheesy Poofs you buy at Kwiki-Mart, because they have to be transported. Flying's got the same connection.

But like many airlines i'm nearly positive ATP gets some sort of fuel discount based soley on the amount the use. I could be mistaken and all but I highly doubt they pay full price.

With the time you already have, I would think you could go to a mom and pop school (or purchase a 150) and save a lot of money. Might take you a bit longer.

Good luck, though.

You are in SLC right?

Yes there is, at Spanish Fork. www.dfcpilot.com

Basically Dr. Smart (the guy that founded the UVSC program, and got railroaded out of there over budget BS) started another school. Since he was railroaded out of UVSC that program has gone into the tank (personal experience). Flying at the new school is an amazing difference.

Basically it is all up to you how you want to do things, fly as much as you want, go at whatever pace you want, get whatever ratings you want, in the order you want them. We have a handful of guys that are doing two flights a day, with ground and lunch in between.

I started flying there at the end of February with about 160 hours and an instrument rating. Other than taking the whole month of April off when my daughter was born, so March and May I flew almost every day and got commercial and CFI done with about 300 hours and a CFI job.

Its the kind of place where you will be treated like you matter and get training that is tailored directly to you.

What do I think? I think, and I'm sure this won't be very popular here, you'll be a 26 yr old who's heavily in debt with very little to show for it. I'll give you credit for finishing your degree but you can get your ratings a lot cheaper at your local FBO.

In my day you couldn't even find a CFI job without at least 500 hrs. Now folks are expecting to be hired and disappointed if they aren't with a Regional airline before that mark.

You do realize that it's going to be very hard to pay that loan back (assuming you took out a loan) on what the Regionals pay the first few years. And that's also assuming you get hired right off the bat. That's big gamble your getting ready to take. I hope you have a backup plan.

Some very good points. I'm sure if you spoke with some of the FO's that have left the regionals after a year or less (and there are a lot), I imagine a lot of them would mention the fact that they simply couldn't afford to pay their loans and other bills on that type of salary. They don't pay you in food and shelter - would be better if they did.

I was happy with ATP, but I went before the price increase, and went without getting a loan.
one thing though is that if you have 100 TT right now, you will graduate with 250 total time (not 350), 140 multi, (roughly 90 Multi cross country). The hours shown on ATP's website is slightly misleading

Which begs the question, in this market, why purchase more than 100 multi? Since that's the magic number, wouldn't it be smarter to build twice as many hours (or more) in a single? Maybe if ATP shifted their focus to less multi-time, they could bring their prices down.

Owning your own airplane is no way to save money. If you buy a 150 you will still end up renting a complex, a twin, and if the 150 is not ifr, well one of those too. Just go to a fbo and rent, be polite, and professional, and maybe they will let you instruct for them.

Mmmmm......chezzy poofs...must go to Kiwi-Mart...50K is a chunk of change, but I guess a good private college is running 30K a year. IMO, that 50K has a lot of bang for the buck. Seniority is the name of game, right? I think ATP gets you there pretty quick (at least doesn't slow you down). I know, let the flames rain down on me....:panic:

Something's not right with that.

You can rent a high performance single for that kind of money.

I think prices are fairly good here in Texas, but I cannot find a high performance single for that price even here.

Our 172's go for $84/hr and the 152 goes for $74. By comparison, I paid $42/hr in 1993 for a 152.

I think ATP is still worth the money personally. It is going to cost me about $35k, maybe more if fuel keeps going up, to do the comparable training mostly at an FBO.

I did a write-up about it here:
http://forums.jetcareers.com/changing-careers/43310-my-ever-changing-plan.html

ATP is going to get you through it faster and most of your time will be multi.

Sorry, you're probably right - I'm in a partnership for an IFR equipped 172, so I have the best situation imaginable - if dude could find something like that, it would be ideal.

and how do you expect to repay the loan company on ###### CFI wages, then ###### airline wages.

making between $19-24 an hour (with an average guarantee of 70hrs a month) i have no idea how someone would even begin to even start knocking out the interest on that monster of a loan.
