Well I think I found a close second to my skydiving adventure...I jumpseated on an entire flight from ATH-AMS. I was visiting a friend of mine in Amsterdam while I was in Greece last week, and apparently my aunt phoned up her cousin who is a chief pilot for Olympic, anD I was surprised upon boarding

It was an amazing experience. The pilots were very congenial towards me and were very curious how flying has changed in the States post 9/11. Curiously enough they knew about Fort Pierce so it was nice hearing their stories abuot my home airport. I was allowed to flip on a landing light on arrival in AMS that was pretty cool I guess hehe. When they were briefing the approach they tried to include me by letting me give a "preliminary briefing" as they called it. They just handed me the approach plate for the ILS 18R into Amsterdam and I briefed it as best I could. I think I did well for my first approach briefing in a jet

It was a very cool experience. Definately better than flying coach that's for sure!

Great experience. Very nice of those guys to do that. It's a shame we can't do anything like that in the US.

I got to ride up front 3 years ago on an Aer Lingus flight from JFK-DUB on an A330. The pilots let me sit up front for about 2 hours while we cruised over the Atlantic, and the FO showed me most of the systems and how he manually tracked the flight with a ruler and map. It was an amazing experience!

Yeah it was a great experience indeed. Sort of made my dream of becoming a pilot a bit more meaningful to me as I got to see exactly what it was like you know? I had no idea that once you get into the cruise phase there really isn't "that" much to do. I mean I know they are still checking systems etc, but the workload seems to go way down. Hell the captain whipped out the Kathimerini (a Greek newspaper). It seemed that above FL 240 the item that got the most attention was the cabin environment control

Last civil jumpseat I rode was an Ansett 747 from Sydney to Tokyo. Last jumpseat I rode was either a 130 or a 17....mainly rode those for the view, since there's nothing to see in the back.

Good effort man! Congrats!

I know how you feel. I got in just before 9/11, got to jumpseat the approach and landing into Changi Singapore on my flight from Adelaide aboard an SQ A340!!!
That was the best! Like you said, in cruise, their workload is bugger all! Old mate was writing a letter to his G/F!!!

Thanks

Aussie

ILSstud: that's an awesome experience, hope i get a chance like that someday.

Slip: Welcome to the board... I see you registered in May, yet have only 1 postl

Aussie: .... what the hell did you just say... bugger all??

Yah mate, bugger all!!
Aussie for not much....

Im sure youz have a saying like that too, perhaps [expletive deleted] all?

Cheers

The saying here would be something like jack squat. And that's the clean version of it.

Awesome ILSTUD, sounds like a hell of a ride. I remember my one and only jumpseat ride. It was my last day on the job as an A&P apprentice and the UPS rep let me ride along on the test flight of the 727 after a D check! I just remembered we overhauled the engines and changed the flaps , pretty much gutted the plane. Scary thought
