Hyperthyroidism questions...

What medications for hyperthyroidism does the FAA deem disqualifying? Also could I still hold a first class medical if I was ever diagnosed and taking a medication that is not disqualifying?

The FAA guide says all records must be submitted to the FAA. If you are euthyroid (TSH is normal), the AME can issue the medical but still must send the records to the FAA.

I've been on synthroid for 5 yrs and no problem, It seems bunch of pilots with my airline are going thru it specially females:nana2:

hyperthyroid medications include Tapazole and PTU. The question seems to ask whether these are qualifying. Synthroid is for hypothyroid. After you are treated for hyper you will go on synthroid or one of these thyroid hormones though!

thanks for the help guys. Now if i had to get a med waiver for a first class, would the airlines know that i would have gotten one or would it just look like any other first class medical?

It depends on whether or not the FAA puts a time limit on the certificate. If they time limit it, the certificate will say NOT VALID FOR ANY CERTIFICATE AFTER xxxxxxx. In that case, the company would know if they ask for a copy of your certificate. The issue then becomes one of the FAA saying you are fit to fly and if the company says you cannot work they are discriminating aginst you. A legal mine field for companies. Most of them defer the decision on fitness to fly to the FAA.

I never had to get a waiver nor a special issuance regarding this so i'm confused to what the problem is?:panic:

I thought medicals had a certain time period of validity? i.e. a first class is valid either for one yr. or six months. Technically the FAA could cut my one yr. validity time down to whatever they feel is needed or would I get a letter saying that I cannot obtain subsequent renewals after a certain date?

That is correct. These are SPECIAL ISSUANCE certificates, i.e,; you don't meet the requirements but they are essentially giving you a waiver.
