Hydration and flavor additive

Hey Walt-

I drink normally about 1.5 to 2 liters of water on the average 8 hour flight

I've occasionally added a flavor additive such as "Mio" to my water an I noticed that my average water intake increased by nearly 30%

Do the benefits of increased hydration outweigh the detriment of introducing a chemical additive? Not that I think Mio is harmful, but I'm of the school of though that when you're thirsty, give your body plain water.

Plain water! Better living through chemistry is a myth. And those flavor additives are traveling chemistry sets.

I add several green tea bags or lemon juice, sometimes I switch to carbonated water...just to keep the body guessing...

I suspect the sweetner in this is probably the reason you drink more. It is a potassium salt which probably increases thirst.

If you don't care for the taste of plain water, is there any harm in adding the zero calorie flavors?

It's pretty simple: drink whatever you want (except alcohol) if you're thirsty, and don't drink if you're not thirsty. Water flavorings usually don't have sugar so you won't get fat or get cavities. If you're thirsty all the time then you should probably see a doctor o_O

THIS, though I'm not a doctor... :)

Water does a pretty good job of keeping you awake at naptime time in the afternoon when you're working though.

I always thought that if you are thirsty, then it is too late, you are probably already dehydrated.

If I add flavor, I drink a lot faster, also. I can down a liter in an hour, even if normally hydrated. Without the flavor adds, to stay hydrated, my routine is big scan and 2 swigs. I do a big scan every 10 minutes or so.

If it's hot and sweaty, I like ice water with a tablespoon of lemon juice and a 1/4 teaspoon of sea salt.... very refreshing.

In all seriousness though you may want to give this a try:

It tastes better than water out the Toilet and it's got what plants crave. Plus it probably wont give you cancer.
