how to compress files?

model700

gettin' there.
Tech geeks assemble! I need help uploading my pictures. When I try to do so, an error message comes up and says my file is too big. Am I SOL or is this a way to fix it?

Thanks

You might want to look at uploading to a site like Flickr, or Photobucket and then linking the photo here. Both are easy to use, and both have great phone apps. If you use LightRoom, you can upload directly to both, if you want to. I tend to like Photobucket a little more than Flickr, but not for anything that I can really put my finger on. Just preference. It will save you needing to re-size, tweak, or compress if you don't want/need to.

I often use http://www.fotosizer.com/ to make smaller web/email friendly copies of the higher resolution photos I take.

It's a quick and easy drag/drop tool and you can easily set the output size, aspect ratio, format, file and folder names.

Using a file mask I typically just add a "_sm" to the file name so it's easy to grab a small copy for email without loosing the original higher resolution photo which I might want for printing or later editing.

If you have photo shop create an action open a blank image, hit the record button. Then "image" image size. Set it to 50 percent. Then chose save. Then close. Then stop recording.

Next to file, automate, batch. Select the action you just made, set input folder, a seperate output destination. And it will resize all photos in the default folder.

You can add any steps you like, say adding a vignette or unsharp mask. Cuts down workflow time

tried making a flickr, how do I place the photos in the thread?

Each picture has its own link. Copy that link, and in the toolbar in the reply box (if you reply to this, or others) you'll see a box with a tree in it. That's the image box. A pop-up will come up where you insert the link you copied from Flickr. Paste the link, and click ok.

In Photobucket there's an option to post a pic using an IMG tag. I'll post one with it broken down, and then post it together so the image appears.Flickr may have an option for an IMG tag, as well.

I put spaces between the M and the G in IMG and spaced the link so that you could see it. It will all go together to post the pic. Below is what it looks like all together.

Canassis, when I do the tree box thing for flick, this bastard blue box appears.
For Flickr:
  1. Select the image you want.
  2. Click on the magnifying glass icon
  3. Select view all sizes
  4. Select the size you want
  5. Right click on the image
  6. Select 'Copy image location'
  7. Come to JC and click the tree icon
  8. Paste the image location
  9. And then:
