How to become a ramp controller?

I'm not sure if i should be posting this in the air traffic section or not, so if I am posting in the wrong section please move the thread.

I have been looking into becoming a ramp controller but there isnt very much information on the topic. I tried using the search bar and only found one thread on it and it proved to be very limited on information. I know either the airlines or the airport staff their own controllers for the ramp and varies by airport and such.

My question is anyone here on this forum a current/former ramp controller? If so can you fill me in with how you got there and what did prior expierence did you have? The daily routine of what you do and also can you give me a range of how much one makes as a ramp controller?

It looks to be like a very interesting field and I would love to hear more about it!

I think it's more tuned towards the Dispatch-type of career field. Too, I remember alot of airlines had internships doing this.
 
Most of the Ramp controllers I know of at DAL are former Managers of some sort within the company, usually they come from the ramp. Not positive on pay but I think it starts in the 30-40k range and prob tops at around 60k. They were hiring for jfk a couple months back and I think that was the pay range but I honestly have no clue. YMMV
 
Check the SFO job board under " other" they are currently looking for a ramp controller. Also if you do a YouTube search of ramp controller there are 2 very informative videos about ramp control, one from DEN and the other from SFO.

The ramp controllers at PHX for US all came from internal slots, usually the ramp or operations.

That is actually the first place I checked and have seen those videos before I decided to post! Many you can learn practically anything from Youtube! LOL

Anyways the videos were very informative but, doesn't address where/how they even got to the position and how much they got paid.
 
The SFO job board has their starting pay and a brief description of what they look for when hiring.
 
yes I did this for about two years before I got hired by the FAA. Basically I started as a customer service agent and worked my way into operations. Specific to Jetblue whomever works in Operations is required to work ramp control as well as other positions. ( In range calls, gate assignment, cross departmental coordination) the pay was 17/hr back when I did it but I moved on to become a gate planner which was 21/hr but they also worked ramped control. There was on the job training that had to be completed prior to you being able to work ramp control on your own. I interviewed at COA at EWR for a ramp control job when I was unhappy at Jetblue and I remember not taking the job because it only paid 11/hr. It was a really cool job but definenetly not something that a career can be made out of.. Tough to raise a family in NYC at 17/hr.

Thank you so much for your reply it really helps! The more I read about it, the more I want to pursue it. I wonder why they pay so little though, could you chime in what the pay raises are and what you could possibly top out at? It looks to be like a very stressful job to be getting paid so little for.
