How to become a ramp controller

title says it all, lately I have been tossing around the idea of switching sides of the radio and this is something that interests me. Thanks in advance.

At certain airports, airline employees handle ramp ops. Here in PHX the US Airways folks control the north side of T4.
 
I had a friend who did that for a while. As I remember, he didn't get that job directly, but worked out on the ramp for a while before being considered for a position in the tow. Of course, I'm sure that are many differences in various locations and carriers.
 
Most places I've known hire from the inside. A dispatch license wouldn't be a bad start.
