How much does it help in applying and succeeding at the academy? I mean, is it no harder to get a degree in something else and apply off the street? I am still trying to decide if I should go into ATC or just do something else in college, and then apply. What would you guys suggest?

If you really want to become an ATC'er I'd suggest going to school for it, you'll have the ATC knowledge and be in line for a job for sure. Applying Off the Street is a crapshoot, I would not bank your career in ATC off applying off the street. You never know they might not accept off the street canidates in a year or whenever you plan on graduating. You can always double major if you want.
