How many people commute?

I'm currently on furlough.

I commuted from Salt Lake City, UT to Newark, NJ, usually once a week. It was anywhere from 3.5-4.5 hours in the air each way.

I commute. I really don't suggest it! :)

It's Friday and I'm already working on finding a way to work for Wednesday. Which, invariably, may involve flying to a different hub, overnighting and then to the airport.

And I just got off a trip! :(

Depending on circumstance, you can spin yourself into a gnash cluster with working and worrying about getting to and from, continuously.

And jtrain, if you're going to insult someone on a forum, the recommended vernacular is your hairy as opposed to you're hairy!

And you're out of LGA too, eh? That's one of the worst because of the restrictions!

I commute, however it's only once, and at most twice a month. And there are enough times I get a ticket from home.

Now, compare that with the domestic job where I bid #2 in base and still was away from home more than I am now with a similar number of days off. The job went from a cakewalk living in base, to more or less, hell just by commuting.

After discussions with my other half, if this job evaporates and I the next job is a domestic-style flying job, we will rent homes and move as needed to make our lives manageable.

I used to and it sucked. Only do it if you're absolutely in love with where you live or absolutely hate where you work.

Otherwise you'll give yourself a permanent ulcer worrying about it. Seriously, you can have 4 days off and on day 2 you're out with the wife having a nice dinner and you can't help but pull out the phone and check loads for your next commute. Its ALWAYS on your mind.

I force myself to only worry about my commute on the night before my trip and on day 4. It makes life easier.

Right now, I live in base, but I hate where I live. I'd much rather be back "home" in Orlando, but commuting to reserve is akin to the seventh level of hell. If I was a line holder or I got more than, say, 12 days off in a month, I'd probably move back.

With the exception of a short time in 2003 and now, I've always commuted. As it is, now I'm 1.25 hours from the base--sometimes longer as I have to detour to avoid shore traffic. For a while when I commuted to DTW that would get dicey at times because many of the flights had jets replaced by RJ's. Heck, I even commuted to SJU and that was OK. Of course having a crash pad in Isla Verde on the beach helped a bit.

but commuting to reserve is akin to the seventh level of hell.

I was on an employee shuttle bus with a 9E pilot a few months ago. He said if he wanted to have his family find him hanging from the shower curtain rod one day, he would commute to reserve at Pinnacle.

I can see that. Especially now when most reserves can expect to be extended or junior assigned leaving them with one day off each week. Not exactly the best scenario for commuting. Might as well go ahead and spend the entire time in base.

As for me, I live in base and it works great for me. In a decent neighborhood and both me and my wife are close to "home" and don't have to worry about crappy pass travel benefits to go see our families.

OK gang I am going to be commuting here soon and I see that express jet has 4 flights a day to EWR from MHT non stop. The other option is like 20 flights a day from BOS to EWR. So the question is how hard do you think it will be to get a spot on one of these aircraft? I am new to the whole commuting thing so any insight would be appreciated.

Back when I first joined this forum didn't you have the view of live where you want? :)

I still do.

Some people are not cut out for it at all.

I commute beause, in my old age, there are no bases at my airline that I really want to make the sacrifice to live in.

But! Commute for a good reason and not simply to allay someone elses fears, desires, etc as you will pay the price big time.
