How does Vacation work?

Do you guys bid on vacation by seniority or what?
I mean, at my company, if we let our truck drivers take vacation whenever, we would be heavily short staffed all of July and Xmas/New Year. Because of this, each division sets a max number of allowed vacations for each week of the year. Then the drivers bid on vacation weeks by seniority. I would assume you would HAVE to do something similar at the airlines as the same result would probably occur if not?

How you described your vacation bidding is pretty much how pilots do it.

There are very few available vacation slots for Christmas & the popular summer months. Those go VERY senior. Bill bids his vacation for mid-October and early March, and always gets it. Those are not popular vacation times, but it works very well for us :)

Also, vacation is bid by category, so you're only competing in vacation slot bidding against people in your own category. So someone who is the senior MD-88 F/O in ATL is going to get his first pick, even though someone who is senior to him on the master senority list, but is a 777 CA and very junior in the 777 CA category, will get a far lesser desirable vacation slot. (Did that make sense? I hope so..)
