How does JAL or Lufthansa airlines operate?

How do JAL or Lufthansa operate their flight control operations? I heard AI is a big part of it! What what ?!

Lufthansa uses a flight planning program called LIDO that they use to generate flight plans. It's not as sophisticated as what I would call "AI" but it is decent enough at what it does. And they basically have people who take a look at those flight plans and check over them before they are sent.

The regulations over there don't require them to have dispatchers. Not sure about how things work in Japan.

One of the things to consider with any European airline and automation is that European weather does not seem to be as extreme as US weather and Europe is way more controlling about where you can fly and at what altitudes.

I work mainly EU to US flights and can attest to this. Eurocontrol can be a pain to work with when trying to get routes away from weather and at times I have had to tell crews to deviate while giving extra gas for that.

Doesn’t UPS use LIDO?

It will be very interesting to see the results if they do. The "problem" for scheduled airlines is a MUCH simpler one than the one facing on-demand charter based on constantly changing Pax demands in constantly changing geographic asset and customer matrices. We worked on this (with some really smart dudes from IBM and Microsoft) back in the oughts. Real-time logistics is a very challenging math problem demanding very pure and up-to-date data. I've been extremely curious about how how AI might attempt to solve.
