How Can I Get

Yeah well I HAVE seen students almost kill themselves. I had a CFII candidate (who has 800 hours BTW) start chasing the needle close to the ground on an ILS the other night. He put his power in at DH and was still pointed down and was 30 degree's off his heading. He didn't have a clue what his heading was as he had simply started chasing the needle.

Don't think it can't happen to you, this guy has more experience than I do, but he made a mistake and I had to the the aircraft away from him because we almost hit a bunch of hangar's.

I think we could all tell stories about flying with scary pilots, but that's not the point!

Bob was just joking around. Maybe it wasn't the funniest joke in the world and maybe it was sort of dark, but it's still not that big of a deal.

Every now and then I'll be walking out the door to go flying and somebody will tell me to have a good flight. I might say something like, "Yep, I'll try not to kill myself!"

Is that inappropriate? I'm well aware of the fact that flying is serious business. I know I could die on the flight I'm about to go on. That doesn't stop me from using humor with a little sarcasm though.

That's how I see Bob's comment. Nobody needs to tell him about CFIT accidents, he knows about those. He made a comment that was so over the top he probably didn't think anybody would take it seriously. I certainly didn't when I first read it. That's a basis for humor, exagerating something.

Maybe I have too dark a sense of humor.

Flew into York, did you?

I've got as good of a sense of humor as anyone, but if I were in that controllers shoes, or if I heard that on freq, I don't think I'd be laughing.

That's funny, because I actually cracked up the whole frequency. You had to be there when I said it because my tone, and delivery was perfect. The controller took ten seconds to respond because he was laughing as well. After he asked, " how will this approach terminate?" I said, "I always wanted to say this, in a smoking heap."

There is nothing wrong with laughing and taking advantage of an situation to inject humor. Believe me, if the controller didn't find it humorous, he would have said Archer *** copy this number and call me when you land.

Thanks man, and you are correct. The joke went over very well. The controller and more than one pilot laughed at the joke.

That made me chuckle. I don't see what the big deal is.

The internet isn't a very good medium for telling jokes. Said with the right timing, tone of voice, and circumstances, I think it would be funny. Said with the wrong timing, tone of voice, and circumstances, it could be scary.

You hit the nail on the head. It comes down to the delivery of the joke, as well as timing.

There's no humor in that comment, at all. You know how many people eat it at the end of shooting approaches for one reason or another?

No, can you tell me how many and whether they were wearing headsets?

No beef with you, but I have noticed that adding humor into the cockpit can lead to serious distraction. Anything that arousing will take everyone's mind off the task at hand. There's nothing wrong with purposely distracting your students, but when everyone's thinking about a joke (including your controller), important things can take a back seat.

In addition, we represent a slice of aviation that has been in the "hot seat" for years. Imagine if you actually hinked up the approach and made the news? Such statements would not fair well.

That being said, we all weren't there, so who are we to talk...

Absolutley agreed! And while flying an aircraft in today's security sensitive enviornment was definatley not the right timing.

What? Cracking jokes about a dead guy while you are at his funeral is not the right timing. There was a lot of humor going on that night. My instrument student just about choked laughing because the timing couldn't have been better. Some of you stiff d!cks need to losen up a bit.

Your last sentence said it all. You had to be there!

I just realized that Bob reminds me of Farva.

I saw Super Troopers. I may resemble his physical appearence, but that's where the comparison ends. You need to come up with something better than this John if you want to try to insult me. It's no secret that I don't like you. Do you realize that Vin Diesel would think you are a homo if he knew you were having dreams about him.

Well, the way you wrote your original note made it seem like ATC was just shocked silent for ten to 15 seconds. I don't know, man. To me, joking about crashing ain't in good taste, but hey, whatever floats your boat.

*Ok I really just wanted to use that image, it's the perfect pair to that quote*

My first posts of the day are not usually up to my comedic standards. That fact, and the fact that jokes don't translate well when written. ATC was busy laughing because the mood was light which meant the timing was perfect. BTW, tasteless jokes which shock are the best jokes. I truley can make a room full of people at a funeral laugh after making jokes about the deceased as he lies there in front of everbody. I just choose not to.

Ahh....bro I don't have a clue what you look like, I'm talking about how you can't control your temper.

I have absolute control over my temper and emotions. I just happen to say what I think and feel.
