Housing when you move from OKC to facility?

How are you all handling housing when you finish up at OKC and are starting the new job?

Do you guys have housing ready to go in the city you're moving to?

Or are you getting temporary housing for a while so that you can settle in and find a good area?

I noticed that Indianapolis is kind of on the way to Oklahoma City for me, since I'm driving from New Jersey. I could quit my job a week early and drive to Indy to look at places. That would give me a few days off to break up the monotony of a long drive. Then head down to OKC from there.

Does anyone who has just gone through this part of training have any advise?

I'm headed to Cleveland after OKC so a couple weeks ago I drove up and checked out some apartments in the neighborhoods I am looking at. None of them seemed to mind showing me around even though I wouldn't be moving in until September.

I actually found an apartment complex I really liked and they said that the would be able to hold any openings two months ahead of my move in date.

The same visit I was able to tour my facility, check out apartments, and get a feel for commute times between the two.

was anyone thinking about buying a house in their new location?

Yeah I was tossing around the idea; there are some pretty good deals on houses right now. I don't really know that much about the city I am moving too though, and I would rather rent for a year, get a good feel for where I want to live, and have plenty of time to house hunt rather then rush into a purchase that I may later regret. (not to mention saving up for a down payment)

Besides, house prices are not going to go up for at least the next few years.

Totally. I haven't even had time to scope out apartments in Olathe, and I'm concerned about signing a 12-month lease, let alone buying a house. :)

I know this varies on a tower by tower basis, but...

does anyone know typically how much time you are given after you graduate OKC to before you must report to your new facility? A week would be nice so I could have time to drive back from OKC and move my stuff into an apartment.

I think you just get 24 hours.

You are "officially" given 1 travel day. This doesn't include weekends, so if you're lucky enough to graduate on a Thursday or Friday, you get the weekend as well. However, your facility is authorized, nay encouraged, to give you up to 8 days of travel time. All you have to do is ask.

Do you get paid for that time? Is there any other opportunity to use it if you do? If not, you may as well use it while you can;)

One of the managers at my facility told me that they were pretty laid back when it comes to time getting there after the academy. She said to just let her know how much time I needed, and usually they give up to a week to get there. Seems like if you just ask, it's not a big deal. So I'm thinking the 2 week vacation to Cancun is out of the question after the academy. :)

I was told your date for seniority is based on your reporting date to your facility, which remains the same in their records regardless of how much of the 64 hours of change of station leave that you use.

I finish on a Wednesday. I called my facility & asked them when I should show up. The HR person told me to report on Friday @ 7:00am. I ended up getting ahold of my manager & he gave me a few extra "relocation" days. All you have to do is ask. They will not offer it.

If you do get leave, do you need to fill out some special form when you get to your facility to get paid for that leave, or do they take care of that for you?
