Hours required for CPL Part 141

Hi all,

How many hours are required (dual, solo and total time) to go for the CPL chckride (Part 141)? I believe that I read something about 55 hr (for the CPL training) and a total time of minimum 120 hr? Now I was told that's not quite correct, one would need 55 hr dual and 65 hr solo, totaling 120 hr for the CPL training itself. I'm a bit confused, since I always thought that the training according to Part 141 requires far less total time as compared to Part 61 which requires 250 hr tt to go for the CPL check-ride. But if one would need 120 hr (55 dual and 65 solo) for the CPL itself (Part 141), this would easily exceed the 200 hr mark and this is not that much of an advantage anymore, in terms of saving money and time?

My school a few years ago had a program with no hard hour mins providing the syllabus was complete. UND and Riddle may as well.

Thanks for the info so far! Are there any total hour requirements at all for the CPL Part 141 check-ride, besides the 55 hr of instruction. Just wondering since I have received different information from different sources so far. Or is it finally up to each individual school how they structure their syllabus? Would be great if someone could shed some light on this.

Did you miss the first paragraph of Appendix D (4)?

(4)(a) Each approved course must include at least the following flight training, as provided in this section and section No. 5 of this appendix, on the approved areas of operation listed in paragraph (d) of this section that are appropriate to the aircraft category and class rating for which the course applies:

(1) 120 hours of training if the course is for an airplane or powered-lift rating.

Part 141, Appendix D refers to the minimum required curriculum for a Part 141 school. AC 141-1A describes the process of Part 141 school certification. It's clear the Appendix D stuff is a minimum and a school might exceed those as part of its certification. I don't have enough practical experience with 141 schools to know to what degree that happens; best I can suggest is to look at the curriculum for the schools you are interested in.

The total requirements for the checkride are the greater of the Appendix minimus and the line items on the school's approved syllabus.

I thought you could only have zero hours through PPL and still enroll in 141. At least that's what SIU was many years ago.

OP, are you trying to just sign up for CPL as a 141 student?

Most commercial 141 course are 120 hours. Once you have your private pilot license and your instrument rating, add 120 hours to your total time. IF it exceeds 250 hours, you are better off going commercial part 61.

Commercial part 61 requires 20 hours with an instructor.

For those saying that 190 hours is the minimum total time to get a commercial rating, that is only true IF you graduate with the private pilot course at 35 hour minmum including checkride.

Where does it say that? I took my CPL at 190 hours from 141 course and got my PPL part 61.

Edit: I took my CPL around 200 actually. I forgot I had to do some time building because of something to do with getting my PPL part 61. Was only about 9-10 hours though.

If you did the bare bone minimums: All part 141: The Private is 35 hours, the Instrument is 35 hours, and the commercial is 120 hours. All that = 190 total time. Anything over 35 hours on your private does not count towards the instrument or commercial courses (Actually there were a few schools counting overages on private towards commercial, but the FSDO's have been taking that away, but that is another story).

If you did the private part 61 and everything else part 141: the minimum for Private is 40 hours (plus checkride), plus instrument is 35 hours, plus commercial is 120 hours = a minimum of 195 total time. If you did your commercial ASEL checkride under 195 hours with a 61 private, then you did not meet the requirements for one of your checkrides.

How many hours did it take to get your private?

I edited my post a little after I posted it. Realized I didn't take mine at 190, I was a little over 200. Thanks for that clarification though.
