Horizon?

So what's the status of the CRJ700's? They being flown to the desert or do we know if someone has actually purchased those planes? I knew before all this recession talk there was a lot of talk about SKW and other regionals getting them. I was just curious how that all is going since that talk has died down.

Also what's all this talk about ASA having the industry high contract? I was randomly looking more through Horizon and 2nd year FO on the CRJ7 was at 42 an hour? Last I checked ASA was 38 for the CRJ900/700 both?

ASA only negotiated an industry average contract about four years after a majority of RJ operators had the same, around Nov/Dec 2007.

They did bust managements ass though to get it.

Currenty word at QX is that the CRJ700's will remain in the fleet till they are bought or leased by another operator. 2 of the CRJ700's have been leased by South African Express (one of which was the University of Washington aircraft, N602QX).

Horizon accepted delivery of N435QX, the first Q400 in "Univeristy" colors, also in UW colors. The next 3 Q400's are going to be stored by Bombardier until they can accept them into the fleet. Those aircraft should also be in "University" colors, there are 4 more remaining (Oregon, Oregon State, Boise State and Washington State).

This will give Horizon (37) Q400's and (18) CRJ700's in the fleet. Up until the end of January, Horizon had (6) Q200's in "storage" as backup aircraft.

That's about all the information that I have on the Horizon fleet update.

As for the pilot payscale at Horizon, it's important to know that Horizon's FO's are not paid based upon "aircraft" and "longevity" like most pilot's are accustomed.

FO's are paid on a "tier" basis...with, for example, the top 100 seniority FO's at CRJ payscale and the remaining 250-ish FO's at Q400 payscale. This allows all FO's to make the highest pay reguardless of aircraft.

Not really sure at this point. We have 68 (I believe) on the street and no word on how long things are going be that way. I know that Horizon cross trained 10 Captains for right and left seat quals, so it would have been nice to get alteast 5 FO's back on line instead of that.

Alaska and Horizon have always been very conservative when it comes to expansion (good and bad), so unless Horizon decides to open up some more LAX flying (to take the place of AE's retired SAAB's), or more intra-California flying...it could be a while till those FO's get back.

I would be ecstatic if they, erm, "forgot" to get another Oregon plane and "accidentally" painted two in the Oregon State theme.

Why in the world would we want another OSU plane...it looks like it ate Candy Corn and threw up on it's self...;)

The U of O plane is by FAR the best looking on that Horizon has! (I'm a lifetime UGA fan, but U of O is my "adopted" team)

Don't mind him, he fly's ugly brazilia equipment which shows he has no good taste!

As long as we don't ones on here advocating USC/UCLA/Cal planes for Horizon, I think we'll be ok.

Thankfully during my time in Portland I got to attend a U of O game at Autzen. It was U of O/ASU 2 years ago (ESPN GameDay, 4 vs 5 in the country)...and coming from some who's grown up in the SEC, Autzen was every bit impressive and lived up to the hype!

(U of O has much better looking girls too, Eugene overnights were alot of fun with QX!)

SKYW looked at the birds, but decided that it would cost too much to get them standardized for our fleet (removing the hud, ect.); I heard something in the neighborhood of .75 to 1.25 million per plane. Apparently they are also very high cycle airframes relative to their flight hours.

I know that a few airlines have looked at Horizon's CRJ's. The HUD's are installed and I'm not sure how much they would cost to take out, and Horizon's aircraft are all Dual FMS equiped. (I think that I saw on Skywest that their's only have 1 FMS?)

Horizon was the North America launch customer for the CRJ 700. So they are some of the oldest CRJ700's around, and they have flown on every route in the Horizon network (Even SEA-EAT!) They were intended to replace the Fokker F.28 (Mk.4000 series) that Horizon had second hand. Horizon placed an order for 25, but only took delievery of 20 aircraft before they were talked into trying the Q400.

After Horizon was talked into the Q400, it turned out to be the plane to beat. I mean, it burns 2400lbs/hour total and carries 6 more pax than the CRJ 700. While the CRJ is more effecient than the Q400 on longer distances (500nm and greater), the Q400 beats just about everything up to 500nm.
