Hey Doug . . . .

Hey Doug, Quick question. I’ve been all talk thus far, partly due to thinking and realizing “the dream.” I’ve finally decided to start with my PPL at a local FBO. Previously, I was thinking of taking a long extended absence from my job, and join the ranks of the accelerated flight schools. Albeit expensive, it would have definitely afforded me that crucial “time” we career changers find somewhat elusive.

Thinking of all the “what ifs” prior to committing my time and money, I’ve also decided to have an extensive check of my criminal history, and my driving record. My question to you is, what reputable services would you recommend that would do a thorough and assiduous job (criminal history, and driving history). What company can you recommend? I have a clean record, no, felonies. But, there was an incident in which I was given a summons for disorderly conduct. All I received was a ticket that I had to pay, no fingerprints, no courts, nothing. Do I have to worry about this little incident?

With that out of the way, the only thing that might hinder me is my driving record. I have crazy parking tickets, my licence was suspended several times do to nonpayment. It has never been suspended due moving violations. I also have about 4 speeding tickets, ranging from 5 yrs ago, to last year. The other thing I have on my driving record is a reckless driving charge, to which I plead down to a lesser degree, notwithstanding, it’s still on my record (assuming). I’m hoping that like other people said, I can make it a learning experience and when asked about it, reply accordingly. What say you? What are my chances?

Oh, I know this question is addressed to Doug, but anyone who wants to respond, go right ahead, I'm all ears!

Lexis-Nexis is a very reputable company. Although I think Lexis Document Services handles personal inquiries.

I don't think doug, personally, knows any companies out there you can look at for doing your background check... I don't know any either...any of the lawyers/paralegals on the board know of any in particular??

as far as the driving record goes - knock it off already sheesh... best thing you can do is explain what past experiences you have now.. but if you keep up on the driving record hits (ie: parking tickets, speeding tickets, whatever) it's going to look BAD and that will not get you hired on when you have your credentials ready to go for interview...

If you get any tickets from here on out, I wouldn't add that to your "learning experience" excuse because you should have already "learned" that lesson the first time right?! and whether or not you plead down to a lesser degree, won't help you in the end, it's still a "splotch" on the record...I'd really try to keep yourself squeaky clean from here on out if your really intent to pursue an airline career....It'll give you the best opportunity available!

As far as the criminal background check's go I have no idea. For you driving record go down to your local secretary of states office, and request a state and national driving record. As far as the suspensions go they are listed on the national drivers register not your driving record. To see if you are listed on the NDR (which the airlines check)go to the NDR website, and request a copy of your record.Just run a search on yahoo under National Drivers Register, and their website will pop up. To lazy to look the site up. The NDR will only report any supensions within the last 5 years. Best thing to do is to clean up your act and show the airlines that you are a safe, and a law abiding citizen.

Not true. This report is a lifelong record of your screw-ups. It only lists which states reported your violations to the national register, not the actual violation. For that, you will need to contact every DMV for each state you have lived in (or received tickets in).

Go here and print this out. Then have it notarized and mail it in.

Now as far as your criminal record goes, submit a written request to the FBI that includes your complete name, address and date of birth. Provide a copy of your passport (preferred), driver's license or other gov't issued ID, along with a complete set of rolled-ink fingerprints. (You can get this done at your local police dept. for a small fee.)

Send the written request, fingerprints, and $18 (certified check or money order made out to the U S Treasury) to:

FBI-CJIS Division
SCU-MOD-02
1000 Custer Hollow Road
Clarksburg, WV 26306

FLpilot - how do you know about the FBI criminal check? seems odd that they would want passport, DL AND fingerprints... I wouldn't send that to anyone through US postal service!! if anybody but the FBI were to get it, your identity would be HISTORY!

this is what I found when I did a quick search on FBI criminal checks...I think they only need fingerprints...and can work pretty much off of that... http://www.ndcr.com/fbi_criminal.html

From their website, http://www.fbi.gov/hq/cjisd/fprequest.html

It appears you are correct about the ID. I was obviously misinformed. According to the site, you are NOT required to provide a gov't ID, just fingerprints and money.

Looks like if you have ever been fingerprinted, the FBI has a file on you.

uh huh... and then after you send them your fingerprints - expect them to keep a file on you right!? haha

One of the nice things about flying out of the DC3 is that I know I am clean. When it comes time, I can say, look, guys, I flew out of the DC3 and was cleared. You need to ask anything else about that?

I think that at least three agencies cleared me.

FLPilot- I disagree the NDR will only report suspensions that are still in enforcement action, and any suspensions within the last 5 years. This information was found on the National drivers register's website.

<font color="blue"> Air Carriers for Pilot Applicants

The Pilot Records Improvement Act of 1996 requires an air carrier, before hiring an individual as a pilot, to request, with the individual's written consent, the Chief Driver licensing official of a state to perform a National Driver Register (NDR) file check. Any information you receive from the NDR should be made available to the employee. If you receive information from the NDR indicating that an individual is on file you will be provided with the name of the State, the address and telephone number in order to request a copy of the driver record to verify that it is the same individual. Information on the NDR file that was reported by the States during the past 5-years and any withdrawal action still in effect will be disclosed. </font>

I have a copy of my NDR report right here in front of me. It was generated less then a month ago and has an item listed that is 14 years old. When I was 16 (I am 30 now), I had my license suspended for excessive points, and it is reflected on this report. That is older than five years, which is why I made the comment.
