Heathen CFI Candidates

Working in a group with two other CFI candidates. One is a college kid, not even 21 yet, another is an active duty military officer, early 30s.

In teaching my class on Flight Control systems, I used an image of the movie poster for "Firefox" (because the Mig 31 had thought-controlled weapons) and I thought it would be an amusing attention-getter.

The military guy recognized Clint Eastwood but had never seen or heard of the movie. Neither had the College Kid.

Then I come to find out that neither of them have seen (or heard of) Iron Eagle.
Or Blue Thunder.
Or Airwolf. (TV, I know, but I was grasping at straws)

Both had at least HEARD of The Right Stuff

My flabber was gasted. I am surrounded by philistines and barbarians.

What movies/TV are - in your educated opinions - REQUIRED WATCHING for CFIs?

What movies are REQUIRED

I would have added "Empire Of The Sun" although it's not really an airplane movie.

It does contain a shot that hits me - hard - in the feels - every. Single. Time. - and it's airplane-related, so I sort of classify it an airplane movie.

Airplane 1 & 2
Air America
Always
Airwolf
Firebirds (just kidding @MikeD )
Flyboys
Pearl Harbor
Star Wars 4, 5 and 6
Space balls
Heavy Metal, but really only one line from it, (guess which one) but the music is awesome for those hard IFR flights, er....so I’m told
Archer
Battlestar Galactica
Anything from Mel Brooks

If you can’t recite lines from at least 50% of these movies you have no place in the cockpit. I would also accept any line from top gun for removal of said crew member. Preferably at altitude.

Best line in the movie

True story, nearly got fired once for making this quote while shooting an approach at a well known bankrupt airline that flew Caravans with open cockpits. PAX behind me heard me make the joke and didn’t find it funny. Some people have no sense of humor.

I've had students that never saw Top Gun
I made them watch it, but not every CFI did
The sky will never be the same again

Why would you do that? I’m pretty sure that falls under the Geneva convention definition of torture.

The good parts of PH could be wrapped up in about 10 min...not including all the KB scenes.

I thought the flying bits were pretty good. I could have done without the kissy kissy crap but the rest of the movie is pretty good. I really liked the soundtrack too.
