Hearing Range

Hey Doc,

My dad was telling me he just got a full workup on his hearing. They went through and tested the range of the human ear and gave him a full diagnosis. I'd like to get something simular to see where my hearing is at. I've always taken pretty good care of my ears (unlike my deaf father :)) but i've always had a weird crackle in my left ear. The biggest concern i have is if I get the test done and it affects my medical can i keep it secret from the FAA? Is it just better to play dumb? I've always passed my first class medical but i'm curious if its something fixable.

Thanks! and Best Regards,
Joseph

Wow, I've been debating posting a question like this for the past three days. I've even developed the same crackle in the left ear....weird.

jynxyjoe, does your left ear act like a poor sounding speaker, buzzing and crackling whenever you laugh hard or somebody talks loud on the cell phone?

Just go to an audiologist or a doc with an audiogram and get your hearing tested. The FAA standard (and what most AME's do in their offices) is the spoken voice at 6 feet.

The last time I had a cold I had something like that happen. It was the strangest thing. The best way I could describe it was that people talking sounded like they were talking to each other through the radios on the X-wing fighters in the original Star Wars movie. I know, weird description, but it fits.

I had a full audiogram done almost a year ago because of perceived hearing loss.

Turns out my 7 years (when I was working) of not wearing earplugs caught up with me. At 32 I have the hearing of an average 60 year old.

For the love of all that's good, wear earplugs!!!

Sorry to hijack and/or preach, but if it'll convince anyone to wear earplugs it's worth it.

I am 44 years old, been flying since 18.

It has taken a serious toll on my hearing. Now I am sporting a tube in each ear because I was dumb enough to go flying when I had a serious cold, that would not go away. I have had numerous ear infections over my career. Now I am able to go back to work, even with that cold.

BUT: Next time (the tubes are supposed to fall out in 6 -18 months) I will not fly with a cold, job be damned.

Funny thing about those tubes - my subwoofer in my home theater and car are now irrelevant. I can not hear below about 200hz or so. Depressing.

It is the perfect description for the way things sounded when I had that cold. I would chase my girlfriend around, "Please baby , just say it, say Switch all power to front deflector screens. Switch all power to front deflector screens. :D

Thanks. Would you be able to give me an example of how loud something is with 20 or 30 dB at 500 Hz?

Sometimes that wierd crackling is a hair shoved way up in there and only a doc with a good light and pair of tweezers or whatever they use can get it out. And boy do you feel stupid for 'living with it' afterwards. . .
