Headset Information

Hey all this is my first post. I am in the market for a headset and I think I have narrowed it down to the Peltor Nordica. Now let me say that I live in Barbados and it would be very hard for me to try varied types of headsets therefore I need the expert opinions of the members of this forum. Have any of you had experience with this set or know someone who has? Another thing, how necessary is it for you to have a personal headset?

I haven't had any experience with that brand, but you might want to try using Sporty's Headset Wizard which will help you determine what headsets are availale based on your criteria...

I use David Clark H10-13.4's but I have Avcomm AC-900's as a spare for when I take passengers. I think the Avcomm is a good budget headset. They have the rubbery mic boom that I think is better than the metal/spring contraption.

Here's a site with Avcomms:

Barbados! I was there for a couple days about a year ago.... love that place!

Anyway, it all depends on how much you're willing to spend.

If a headset says it has 18db of Active and 20db or Passive noise reduction. Would you simple add the active noise reduction on top of the Passive reduction?

I am not very concerned with either Passive or Active, once it cancels out some noise then it is good enough for me.

These Peltors are rated at 23dB or 25dB, can't remember which of the two it is. They are also very light (9.8oz) and most importantly under $150 so I figure I can't go wrong.

I just want to know what Peltor's reputation is like where aviation headsets are concerned. I know the company from watching WRC, but I don't know them when it comes to anything else.

As I said, I've been very happy with the quality of my Peltor headset. Same is true for a friend of mine who has a set. When it came to getting new ones, I would have bought another pair if they had the features I was looking for this time around.

BTW, even after the 10 years, they are still going strong as my wife's headset.

I don't know the Nordica, but I flew with a set of Peltors (7004) for about 10 years and loved them.

Agreed. 7004's were my first headset. I liked them cause they were LIGHT, fit well, they could fold up into a little ball, and they were priced well. Later I bought a Sennheiser HME100 headset to replace them - VERY similar earcup/headband design.

Regardless, if you get Peltors (well, almost any GA headset really) I would suggest getting a set of Oregon Aero earseals for them. They make a huge difference, well worth the money!
