Hard

Man this instructing thing is hard! Ive got 1500TT but only 2 hours dual given. I just picked up a student that has her own plane..wants to get her private...

It's a lot harder than I thought to do a good job. I find myself neededing to prepare before the lesson, review things myself, and work hard and not tripping over my own words in flight.

I have a little more respect for my fellow CFIs now.

Just thought id share.

I only have 50 dual given, but all I can say is it gets a lot easier the more you do it. Soon, the words will just jump out of your mouth and you'll wonder where it all came from.

Have fun!

Two pieces of good news:

1. For you - it gets easier, and you'll learn a lot in the process.

2. For your students - if you care enough to put that extra effort in order to do the job right, you'll be a wonderful instructor, even for that first student.

congrats on getting your first student. by 50 hours things will start to fall into place at about 200 it'll be running like clockwork.

I noticed when I first started flying I didn't really feel totally comfortable until I got about 100 hrs in my logbook. Then when I started flying the twin, I remember one flight I just felt like I owned that airplane... That was on a 4 hour cross country when I had about 90 hrs in the plane. Then when instructing I felt like I had a really good feel for how things went around 100 hrs of dual given. I think everyone should try and get at least 100 hrs of dual given... It did change (for the better) my mindset on flying. Very helpful I think!

So I guess somewhere around 100 hrs is my magic number.

Just don't get frustrated and let them see your frustration. This is when I knew my instructing days were coming to an end when I started becoming "that" instructor. I basically burnt myself out trying to pay the bills and in the end I lost the patience for students who weren't stupid (as they were in my mind) just new to flying.

Nice....I hope that I can just be a good instructor for my students when I begin!

If you have to worry about it, you don't have to worry.

How's that for confusing?

If you're that concerned with how you will be as an instructor, you'll be a good instructor. Of course, there will be times when you question it, but once you get a signoff and a solo or 5, you'll know you're in business.

I just sent my first one solo away from the airport to the practice area. I was really nervous till he landed. Once he did and *claimed* he had no problems and had a good flight, I really felt great I taught him how to do all that.
