There is nothing weird about being assertive at the start of a trip.

That's called a coupled approach. Should be covered in the autopilot or FMGC section of your CBTs.

but the cause was apparent as soon as the cowling came off. The engine failure was unrecoverable.

If you can see a rod or piston when the cowl is removed, that makes cause of failure pretty easy to determine.
