GPS jamming at KMSN?

anyone who has/does fly into Madison, WI... is there something goofy with the GPS there?

stopped for fuel there yesterday and w/in about 3nm of the field my GPS just started going bonkers, crazy speeds, locations, altitudes, etc... BUT, never lost the sattelites or complained about lost coverage, etc.

i know theres a military facility on the field there, is there some sort of GPS jamming there?

It must be your GPS receiver. No jamming going on there......

......that you know of.

12V battery and the right antenna from radio shack and you can knock out almost 3 miles of coverage.

I'm sure DARPA has spent millions on perfecting it of course :)

Thats fascinating to me, how the heck does that work? For knowledge gaining reasons of course, not for jamming our future gps only airspace system.

Basically you simulating something they used to call "ground echo". Confuse the hell out of the GPS. On a side note, my dad's old Magellan (Texas Instrument) handheld used to be able to knock out anyones handheld GPS in a 5 yard range. He made sure not to use that on a plane :). TI makes better stuff now.

Someday AOPA will stop playing cheerleader and actually report on aviation instead of making the equivalent of "People Magazine" for pilots. Then this stuff won't come as such a shock to people.

I'm, by far, not the first to think of this. The FAA plan was: put a powerful (ground powered 480V or something) unit by the airport to blast away anyone jamming it, and GPS units would used this ground based system to ensure signal integrity. It would probably work fine. The reality is, the way the system works now, it is pretty susceptible.

Very cool (for lack of a better term) and interesting.... thanks!

it wouldnt surprised me if it was purely just my equipment sucking/failing on its own. most everything else on the aircraft is already inop.

It is going to take a little more than a battery and an antenna. Like at the very least a tuned oscillator and output amp to go with your battery and antenna. But jamming it would be scary easy.

IIRC, they just killed Loran, and that may have been a good plan B.

Oh that's right.....they're PFs and PMs now?

Yep it takes 2 pilots to handle an F172

you can see the X through the right one.

Now THATs funny! :D

It's also hilarious seeing "HUD baby" pilots in the military....namely F-16 guys. Green stuff goes away, they want to go home!

Yeah was trying to make a point. Not put on a public forum how to build it. Nice though.

One of our planes was through there Friday afternoon. They didn't say anything about GPS problems when I talked to them.
