google sat maps

Hey, has anyone seen google's new sat maps? I looked at jfk's photo and you can see someone either taking off or tax back on 22L. I would like to see an airplane sat photo either taking off or landing. If anyone sees one on google sat maps, post which airport so everyone can check it out. Just kind of cool.

saw the article on CNN about it. People were rasing a stink, "oh my god, there's a satellite photo," Like there is a security problem. Some people!

The photos are months old and there is nothing to worry about. The coolest feature is that Google maps can overlay the driving directions onto the photo and make it real easy. The quality of the photos are much better than what has been available for some time through Microsfts' TerraServer.com.

Are you refering to the Keyhole software?

Yep, it appears that Google purchased them.

Keyhole is pretty nifty. It is worth the free trial. I know I posted this a while back, but NASA has an impressive program of similar quality called WorldWind. They recently upgraded it to version 1.3 (1.3.1 is current) and it is very nice. It does not have some of the same super high res images of cities like Keyhole, but it is very good and it is free.

Also came across the CNN article. A few friends of mine currently work at Google and have been real busy these past few months. They are pretty much working 8am to 8pm, slaving away to come up with these new features.

Anyway, I have been using similar color satellite photos from USA Photo Maps (FREE) for a few months now. The program lets you integrate your GPS tracks with the satellite photos.

(The High res. color images are only available in densely populated areas, while Black and White and Topographic images are available for all other areas.)

Just thought others might want to know what other satellite photos programs are out there.

Go Google!!!!!

Gosh, somehow I knew that security would be mentioned. I just wanted to see pictures of airplanes from satellites. Makes me feel like I am in command and conquer.

What is command and conquer and why do you feel like you're in it?

I looked at a bunch of military bases and had no problem finding some very sensitive areas such as ammo dumps/bunkers and even the home of the Delta Force training center. Nellis was pretty cool looking as they had a lot of interesting stuff on the ramp. Couldn't find a B-2 anywhere though. Also found the Hangar for Air Force One, I think.

Ha, I found a shadow of a plane in the local practice area and scrolled around and actually found the plane in flight.

Looks like most of this stuff is pre 2002 or so.

Check out Dallas airport, the left pair of runways, heading north. I see at least five shadows, for the first three I found planes to go with (767,757,767). forms a nice evenly spaced line from the end of the runway.
I work a lot with GIS software and ariel maps. They are more accurate and have more functions but these maps a much easier to use and faster.

Wouldn't it be funny if they had moved all the super secret operations from Area 51 to some other place and just left a facade up there?

What if all those dudes flying Janet were just there to keep up appearances?

Supposedly, there is a new Area 51.

New Area 51

wow... that's really impressive!

what do you think the little area to the south is? reminds me of a Xfiles episode and looks kinda martiany

Check out the boneyards in AZ and NM. I never realized how much was stored at Davis-Monthan till I took an aerial peek at it. Pretty Neat
