Google Earth

I don't know if any of you out there have tried using this as a flight planning or instruction tool, but I just found out about Google Earth today and it is AWESOME!!!

I got done with a student today and was trying to give him some ground references to help him stay in the MOA. I was trying to point out a bend in a river that is shaped like a bear's head (I think) and is right in the center of the area, but try as I might, he couldn't see where exactly I was talking about. I rolled us inverted right over the section of river as I said, "look that bend forms one ear, that bend over there is the other ear, and this curl here is the nose," and he couldn't see what I was talking about. So anyhow, we land, and he pulls up Google Earth on his computer and we get a satellite shot of the river and I can point right to the particular bends in question. In fact, I can point out every reference in the pattern, too. Then I pulled up a shot of the Air Force Academy, and you can zoom in so close that you can tell what the Aircraft in the static displays are. Freakin' SWEET. I may have to add this to my strange field checklist!

Check out the new hi-res imagery of the Las Vegas strip. You can make out individual PEOPLE. :o

And if you think THAT'S cool, click this -- which should open up in Google Earth. It's an extruded GPS track of my flight on Wednesday. Extra credit if you can point out what was so unusual about where I was. :)

ive had it for a while.

take a look at the ramp on KAFW (alliance)

i thought it was a goofy antonov but upon really looking at the tail shadows, we esablished it wasn't a T-tail and probably a 747. what yall think?

I love to use Google Earth to look at checkpoints or targets on low level routes. Another good website is www.terraserver.com . You have to pay to get full use of it but you can search by coordinates and get a pretty good resolution b&w picture. I like to use it for my targets. when you search a coordinate select the USGS picture, they seem to be the best.

Just cranked it up again, haven't used it in awhile, wow they really updated Okinawa! They have some decent zoomed images, can make out everything at Kadena AB. I even found where I live off base. :rawk:

<---- If you look at my avatar to the left, that is the exact area I have pinned on that file i uploaded from google earth
