Good thing they're eliminating ground-based navaids...

I thought they were eliminating redundant NDBs and LORAN. We'll still have VORs and will likely have them for a long time to come.

better keep those vor's and ndb's around for awhile. we still fly /a all over the country.
We're /U. :p Actually, I don't see VOR's going out of style any time soon. Just think of all the ILS's out there too! And they came first! At least the LOC part did. Wait... this is part of another discussion.

i hope not. i will miss the day when the vor needle doesnt sway back and forth when you are right down the line.

FAA said it plans to cut VOR's around 2012 if I remember correctly.

There hasn't been a new ILS put up in 2 years.

Hmm not sure, I talked to an FAA guy (very high up) and he said no new ones have been put in place.

I'm not going to believe any of this VOR/ILS are going away nonsense until I cant shoot my favorite NDB approach.

Yay for /A aviating.

Wow I'm surprised the FAA isn't ready to dump all its eggs into the GPS basket. I mean it's not like a 12V battery and the right antenna could knock out the coverage for 3 or so miles.

Also, to navigate by GPS you are required to have applicable navaids for your route of flight.... I guess they would just rewrite the FAR?????

You heard it here first...the deactivation of VORs brings about the apocalypse.
If sunspots increased, as I heard they're expected to, would the land based radio signals be as adversely affected as the Satellite communications?

Are there any RNAV approaches with minimums comparable to a CAT II/III ILS?

Seems like that would be a prerequisite to removing ILS equipment.

Here's my take,
they have been removing NDB's for a long time but guess what? There are plenty of NDB's out there.
Does anyone really think ILS and VORs will be eliminated in the next 10 years?
