I called a local flight school in the DFW area today to ask about getting checked out in a particular airplane. Instruction is now at $47/hr. For that much, it better come with some MLB tickets. Out of that I'm sure the instructor gets about $15/hr . . .

What are the instruction rates you guys are seeing out there right now? Both charged to customers and paid to instructors.

Justin,

The flight schools make money off of the instructors. I have seen rates from $35 up to $75 an hour in recent months. $45 seems to be an average.

The instructors receive $11-$25 of that amount.

A CFI not tied to a school seems to be around $35 an hour these days.

Your area may vary, but this should give you a general idea.

Not sure which flight school you spoke to, but I agree that's about average for the DFW area.

There are a few flying clubs out there which charge considerably less. The North Texas Flying Club at KTKI charges $30 per hour for instruction. Their airplane rates are a little higher, but they bill on tach time and they're a good group of folks. The Texins Flying Club, also out of KTKI, has a wide selection of planes. Instruction there is $35. I've met a few instructors there and they also seem to be good folks.

Rockwall and Mesquite also have a few places where you can rent reasonably and potentially find good instructors. Just gotta dig.

There is another club out of KADS which has a Bonanza

We charge 57 for Private Instrument and Commercial
and 65 for Tailwheel, Aerobatic and Multi
I believe 70 per hour for using customer aircraft

Of that I get 22 for regular instruction and 25 for tailwheel and aerobatics.

In the Bay Area rates start around $50/hr. From that I do not know how much an instructor gets, it differs from each place. If your an independent you keep what you charge.

I charge $35 to $45 per hr your airplane. That seems to be going rate around here for most independents.
