Glider Flying Advice

about the only way to get closer to the air is to put on a chute and do some sky-diving. In free-fall, you can speed up or slow down by changing your hand/leg positions. and on a spring day when the grass has just been cut and you are in the harness at about 1500-2000ft looking at the world, it can bring a smile to your face.

Trust me though.. the first jump will put your heart rate to the max, you will question what sort of insanity brought you to the logic that this was a good idea and time will seem to stop until you get snatched by the chute opening.

Incidentally this is where I went gliding (in central FL) http://www.soarfl.com/main.htm

I have been there before, its a pretty nice place, with some really nice equipment.

If you would have been down there a week or two earlier, you could have seen the senior nationals, one of the biggest races of the year in the US!

Im glad you liked it, and looking forward to seeing pics!

I want to get into skydiving as well! I have done 3 tandem jumps, all pretty amazing I must say :D I know I missed the competition by a week or so. My instructor said something like 52 gliders came in. It must have been an amazing scene! Unfortunately for me, money is tight at the moment, but when I get some funds I definitely will go for the glider add on. I have to admit though the glass canopy (while it was an INCREDIBLE view ...) made me a little queasy feeling at first. That was very unexpected because I have a pretty strong stomach, is that normal?

Not uncommon. With the canopy, you don't have stuff to serve as a frame of reference. Nothing around you to separate you from the sky. So, yes, for first time it is not unusual and then to the tight circles to stay in the thermal can be disorienting.

You should acclimate readily...

Glider flying is ok.... The thing is all sailplane pilots have to wear these goofy bucket hats. That's why I prefer flying the towplane.

Over my favorite gliderport...

It was an amazing experience; the one thing that really stuck out was the amazing view out the glass canopy. Call me crazy, but I either have to keep flying gliders or go join the military, Cessna cockpits are so less connected to the environment that you are flying in :D

Yeah, I found the same thing out when I first flew the Diamond 20. Throw it into a steep turn, and its beautiful to look at the ground. Do some spins, and then your looking straight up through the canopy, but looking straight down at the ground. First time was like, woah, am I going to break that glass?

Serious question for you. How long does it take to drive over there from Daytona? I've been thinking about trying out a little bit of glider flying, but can't find anywhere around Daytona to do it, other than up in Pierson, but the price is fairly steep up there.

It is a BIT of a drive....but my gf lives in Orlando, so from there it was just another 40 min or so. I would say total time would be around an hour and a half. My GPS took me some circuitous way so it very well might be less. I tried contacting some of the Riddle people at Pierson to know avail.
