Gettin' old! (EKG's)

Hey Doc!

I do my first EKG during my first class this year because I'm the ripe old age of 35 now.

What is the FAA, in a basic sense, looking for and do you have any pointers? Or is it as routine as the old blood pressure test?

Thanks1

Doug

It is routine. They are all transmitted to OKC where theyare read by their computer.

I think the idea was to get a baseline at 35 then look for "silent" changes of heart disease. It is not really the best way to do that but "better" options medically are the treadmill stress test - would find way more abnormals. They do not do this and hopefully never will.

Just relax for the EKG, don't lather up with body lotion (patches don't stick) and enjoy:)

When I did mine Dough, It took a whole 30 seconds I think and it was no big deal really. I don't know what they are looking for though.

The nurses take an evil delight in ripping out chest hairs also. :)

I don't!!!!! When I work in the ED, I always have a razor in my rooms. Almost always there is enough time to shave the chest for ECG patches.

My question, and I believe I know the answer, is why can't I have one of the EKG tech's do a EKG, take that copy into the AME's office and have them transmit that one to the FAA.

IS it a custosy of control issue ?

I'm just trying to be cheap

It can be done. The place that does the EKG has to have the ability to transmit the EKG to the FAA's computer. This means trying to set up a standing relationship with the site and getting the phone number to them. The FAA really prefers the AME do the EKG, then if they have issues, they (the FAA) has recourse with the AME. You can't scan it, the EKG must go digitally. It is usually a logistical issue of getting the EKG done before the exam, insuring it was transmitted, etc. I have tried this and it is a real pain to insure it all happens.

Also, we have an electric clipper for the hairy bears - works well.:)

Whaddaya need a first class for? No EKG required for second class....

If you fail an EKG getting a class of medical certificate you're several years away from needing again, well...that would suck needlessly. Sorta falls under the category of "don't ask questions you really don't want to know the answer to".

This is true. Some of the carriers require FO's to get a Class 1 but only once a year, thus allowing it to lapse to a Class 2 at the 6 month mark.

With the horses, if they were sick and muddy they would get hosed down before surgery, and there was no way the electrodes would stick - we assist their sticking ability with 18 gauge needles - sounds mean but when you are having a 16 inch incision into your abdomen, colon laid across the table - 4 extra needle sticking in and out of you, are really the least of your concerns.

I had a "crazy" patient (I'll leave it at that) who kept pulling off his ECG patches and wires. I walked over to him with a skin stapler, and told him, "rip one more patch off and I staple them to your chest" He was quiet for the rest of the night.

Ok, so the sedatives finally kicked in.

what exactly are ekg's for? i had to get one two weeks ago before i had surgery on my foot. i am only 21 years old should i be worried? i have had surgeries before and have never had to have an ekg. just thought i would ask while it was on my mind. thank you for the replies.

For a 20-ish guy, it is CYA for the anaethesiologist. :(

The things looked for in EKG's are old heart attacks, electrical conduction abnormalities, and rhythm abnormalities.

thanks. the whole process took about 5 minutes so didnt make me too angry to do it. thanks again for the response.

Well we never had one fall off - about the stapler, it really does not hurt as much as your would imagine. We had a stapler with just one in it, and I was dared to staple my arm...... veterinary medicine has the same types of personalities as medicine, but we can get away with a bit more.

You are required to go a first class medical. But as FO, you are allowed to let it lapse to a second class.

Besides, you don't want to learn that you can't get first class certified the month before your type rating checkride. Bad news!

Is someone keeping a secret? :D :sarcasm:
