Garmin G430 Failure

I made my initial approach call into GFK, and got nothing back. Called again and I still wasnt receiving. I looked down to check frequencies, and I could see that there was an RX indicating that I was receiving transmissions on the freq, but audio was gone. Checked volume, etc.. and even plugged my headset into the copilot slot. Nothing. So here I am, thinking "great. 7600 for me... uhh what were those lightgun signals that I learned once upon a time? :(" Finally, nearing about 20nm from the airport, I decided to try resetting the system, turning each unit off and back on. That worked for about 30 seconds--long enough to alert ATC of my problem--and then the audio went dead again. Anyone have any idea of what would cause this? Overheating?

Yes, I landed safely, and ATC even had the courtesy to inform me what my lightgun signals would be, incase I lost coms trouble again. :)

So how did it go in the pattern? real world light gun signals and sqwawking 7600 is a good experience.....details?

both failed? Which aircraft were you in? I had a few 430s act up on me. Some from the 40-50 series warriors.

What kind of headset do you have?

I wouldn't be surprised if it is your headset. Do you have the junk aka AvComm? For some reason I doubt it was both GPS's taking a crap, but I suppose anything is possible. I guess you'll find out next time with your headset.

no, it wasnt the headset. i did try using the speaker function and no joy. then i whipped out my portable transciever and got about 2 minutes of battery out of it, so the headset was working. DC hasnt failed me yet.

the thing with both of them failing at the same time isnt all that difficult to imagine if you realize that they are both slaved to one comm unit, which controls the functions of both. so much for redundancy. :insane:

You might want to look into getting each one tied to it's own comm, to avoid this in the future. If that's possible (clueless about 430s here)
