Garmin 296

Douglas

Old School KSUX
Hand Held GPS units.
Are there subscriptions? or a monthly Fee?
Is it a plug in and play sort of deal?

A student of mine just gave me a Garmin 296 and I really don't know anything about handhelds.

Very generous.

Plug and play bud. You can pay for map updates when they come out if you wish. Other than that there are not subscriptions for the 296 to my knowledge. I believe only the 396 and 496 have the weather subscriptions. You will know, did it come with a round antenna that says XM on it?

It will look like this:

Other than XM weather, there are no subscriptions for these handhelds. Enjoy, they are really nice.

Plug and play. The 296 is a color version of the 196. It has a faster processor, brighter screen, and a few other differences. It doesn't have the ability to get weather or radio via XM.

I still use my 196 since it works well and I'm too dang cheap to buy a 496. Thats a pretty cool gift.

Where do I get some students like that!! Sweet deal..

Sweet gift, you can throw away your flight bag now, no need for anything besides the trusty 296 baby. I think the updates are $60 and offered every 6 months....not necessary though

They're offered every 56 days, on the FAA cycle, just like all GPS database updates.

How often people choose to update their handhelds is their own decision.

Updates are available every 56 days, but only cost about $35-$40, maybe a little less. It's been a while since I've updated mine or I'd remember the price

296 is a neat little gps but the lack of weather is what i hated when i had one. moved up to a 396 once i got my instrument rating

The 296 has NavData, Obstacle, and Terrain. NavData is 49.95 every 28 days or 295 for 13 cycles. Obsacle is 49.95 every 56 days or 195 for 7 cycles. Terrain is ~once a year and is 150.

There is no XM on a 296.

Just my opinion here, but all of that is a waste of money. Maybe navdata yearly just so your not way out of date. As for the others, search for that post with the bonanza doing terrain clearance with their 496 and see what I mean. I personally have a 496 and I do not update it ever, not in 8 months at least.

It is a backup and with the installed software it works fine for that. It can draw a pink line for me and keep me out of airspace in the busy NJ area. Anyways, short of it IMHO don't waste your money on all this stuff.

I can justify updating the nav data from time to time, Obstacles too- but I don't think terrain changes significantly in less than several hundred thousand years, so I'd vote no on that

It can draw a pink line for me

Oh..., colorblind, eh?
