I have flown a Garmin 430.

Now that Im flying a G1000 I am not sure about the exact updates required. On the G430 it would list your gps exp date and all you did was update that and your gps was current for IFR. Now with the G1000 I can update Terrain data, Jeppview etc... To be IFR current for approaches do I have to keep everything up to date or is there select items that have to be current.

For AVIATES maint list the VOR check since its all digital on the G1000 and not a regular gauge is that check no longer required? Im a noob on the G1000 system.

In short terms, in order to use the GPS legally for IFR operations at all times, you've got to have the current navigation data. The terrain data, Jeppesen charts and all the other stuff doesn't have to be current.

And yes, you've still got to do the VOR check on a G1000. Works the same way. Tune your station, and use the CDI to check it. Well, that is if you plan on using the VOR for IFR operations. With a WAAS equipped G1000, I suppose you wouldn't have to do the VOR check.

Not necessarily. You can use an outdated database provided you verify the lat/long of all of the waypoints.

Unless you have to MEL it with the database out of currency. We had to do that a few months ago. What a ridiculous arrangement filing airways everywhere.

Thus why I said in order to legally use GPS under IFR at all times, you have to have a current database. I've done lots of flying with an out of date database, and it's not bad if you file direct to an airport. You know, airports don't move very often.:D

Now that you've said that they're pulling one up right now ;)
