Furloughed Pilot Recalls

At the major airlines, I thought there recently have been a few hundred retirements per year. Plus, haven't the airlines started to add more flights again because of improving load factors? (Yesterday, both DAY-DFW and DFW-PHX were oversold on AA, and DFW's C terminal was crowded!!!) If not, it surely seems like they've at least stopped reducing the flight schedules.

So, I wonder why I haven't heard about more furloughed pilot recalls.

Well, I see that last year Doug was talking about some at Delta. In fact, wasn't MDPilot recalled? Anyway, how about the other airlines?

I'm anxious to see these recalls happen because, of course, I want to see the majors hiring again.

One mitigating factor is productivity. For the airlines that have given concessions their pilots are working more, meaning fewer pilots needed.

In Delta's case the furlough recall was required by the contract.

well i know that delta was suppose to recall their pilots but i was just wondering did they actually do it yet. I know that there was talk that it would take a while since they would have to retrain the pilots

maybe doug knows more???

A lot of the increase in flights has gone to the regionals instead of the majors. That would account for some of it.

I saw something that our buddy Kit Darby did. For the network carriers, the number of people on furlough ranged from about 20 percent to about 30 percent.

Ouch.

Yea, I've been recalled. Still haven't been to training yet, currently scheduled for Oct.

When a pilot has been recalled, but has a training date so far ahead, is he/she getting paid again? Or does getting paid only happen when training starts?

It depends on the contract. In my case, I'm getting the reserve guarantee (70 hrs/mo) calculated at the lowest pay rate in the contract (727 Flt Eng, even though we haven't had any 727s in almost 2 years.) Other companies' contracts are probably different.

Delta is recalling but they are doing in as small of a group as the contract will allow I am sure. I think the recall rate is 30 pilots a month or something like that
