Funny Voices....

During my instrument training, there was this one x-country flight that was long and boring. My instructor, at the time, handled the radios while I flew. By handling the radios, I mean switching from one center to the other. I handled all the hard calls (clearances, approach clearances, etc.)... Anyway, to lighten up the mood he started checking into new frequencies with funny voices. He would call up LA center and check in with various character voices: cowboy, exagerrated gay guy, french, etc.

Can ATC do anything about that? Would/can they get pissed?

Well, I was recently reading an AOPA article that gave me a great/funny idea. One of my friends is great with voice impressions... I just think it'd be funny if he read back a clearance or instructions with a Homer Simpson voice or something along those lines....

Given that everything is said clearly and to communication standards, is this perfectly ok????

I dont know if its okay. But as long as its clear and the language used is apropriate and relates to the services needed I dont think they can find a problem with it.

I wish I was the actor that does Homer Simpson's voice. I'd make every call as Homer! Mmmmm, clearance delivery, aggghhhhhhh....

I am kind of a Fat Bastard fan myself

"Ohh, cleared to gimmie intersection are we? Well, listed up controller! I ate a baby!"

ATC can get pissed if they want to, but it would only really be if the accent caused you to be unreadable. That's about it. Aside from that, enjoy! Mind you, you can always get the grumpy controller who isn't in the mood, but so what.

As a pro pilot, I'd like other pilots to keep it brief and professional.

For me, the shorter the better.

The "Ahhh, Minneapolis ahhh center, Airliner one for seven niner ahhh with you ahh flight level ahh 2-4-0 looking for ahhhh direct ahhhh.....ahhh.....ahhhh... North ahhh platte if you can ahhh accept that uhhh, sir..." just chafes my hide.

Even worse, one guy thought he was funny trying to 'hook up' with a female controller over Ft. Worth center right in the arrival sector one summer afternoon when we're all diverting around weather and starting down on the descent profile.

By all means, if you want to be funny, land, pick up your cellphone and play 'radio' with some of your pals.

More than, "Kansas City Center, this is Bow-nanza 5-Suga-Pop, offa uhh - Sedalia, goin ta Oscah-Juliet-uhhh . . . Cee."??

Meanwhile, I'm trying to check in for the last 3 minutes.

Lloyd have you heard the Valley Girl out there yet?

When we were doing the RDU-LAX (or SJC) flights for Midway I would hear this girl saying "Midway 501 this is Connsis City Center, did you check in?"

Took me forever to figure out she was speaking Valley Girl - I kept saying to my captains "What is that accent?" I like to do the Henry Higgins thing and figure out where people are from.

I stayed away from this thread for a while... I wasn't going to add anything but I changed my mind and will add my $.02. Our job is tough enough, especially on the listening side. We have crappy headsets, crappy equipment, and many of us deal with foreign pilots where English is way down the list of languages they speak. One of the top factors in ATC operational errors is due to hear-back read-back errors. There are plenty of times to have fun but on frequency that is the time to act like a professional.

Oh, btw, keep in mind that my instructor did it on a x-country flight from LA to Vegas. The radios were pretty damn quiet. I was even wondering if the radios were working 'cause there would be long periods of minutes before anyone said anything on the frequency.

On another occassion it was on a flight from Sacramento to LA... same senario w/real quiet radios. My instructor was bored and just started asking the controller if he knew what the score was. Funny thing is, the controller did know the score of the 'big game' at the time....

We're asked non ATC stuff all the time, sports scores, been asked to meet flight crews for drinks on their layover, etc. To me that's a professional courtesy and we're happy to provide answers. I just think that it's not the place to play games. I understand that the intent is not harmful, but it's just not a good idea. I have seen countless times where the tapes were pulled on something and someone, controller's and/or pilot's sounded like idiots on the frequency. Just my $.02 ...

Oh right and controllers never goof off on the frequency. Yeah surrree!

In my opinion, the key is to know when to knock it off. If you come on freq and it takes you 4 minutes to check in because the controller is busier than a one-legged man in a butt kicking contest, you might want to lay off the french accent until some other time and place. Of course, common sense isn't always so common, so it's hard to tell when you "should" or "should not."

Mocha hagotdi :nana2:

Wish I remember where those LiveATC clips are that I downloaded of that

I'll tell you EXACTLY where you got that one.

For those that fly into BOS on a regular basis, there is a controler that has a ton of sayings.

instead of Colgan its "COOOOOOOOOOOLGAN"

Jetblue is "JetBLUUUUUUUUUUUUUU"

American is "AHHHHHMERICAN"

Mocha hagoti is for the Cape Air guys

Buena Serra to Alitalia

But it is all in a professional tone. Is there a way to nominate a controller for doing a great job?

ALL of you guys do it and I REALLY apperciate this forum, just wondering on the best place to send feedback to?
