frustrated

So I live and work on a small town for the time being. I'm trying to get my flight ratings done while I'm here but there's only one plane and very few instructors in town . The closest airport is probably an hour away. One person keeps renting the plane at the times both my instructor and I are available to fly. Because of that I only fly once every other week. Such a frustrating situation. Anyways just wanted to get that off my chest. /rant

If it is that much of a problem and there is another airport an hour away, hell, I'd drive an hour away! Just sayin.

I'm pretty sure it's the same person. The problem being I'm guessing is we have the same job same shift and same instructor. It seems to be a battle of who can reserve it the quickest. I would make the drive but the other airport charges entirely too much and they also only have one aircraft. I wish this town had more aircraft. They have enough students for it.

go as far into the future as you can and schedule the plane for the times you want! I tell my students its a lot easier to cancel then to get a last minute reservation! You may not get the plane for a couple weeks, but most people don't schedule more then 1-2 weeks in advance!

Yeah, schedule yourself as much as possible in the future.

I've seen this happen a million times at my old school, unfortunately there is no unwritten rule about sharing the plane, that person is just being selfish and the actual unwritten rule is to schedule yourself as much as you can.

So it wouldn't be bad etiquette to schedule a couple weeks in advance? The thought had crossed my mind but I thought it would be frowned upon.

Well you're going to have to do what you have to do. You guys' instructor should be able to resolve this issue though. Usually it's a first come first serve deal though.

He obviously doesn't care when he schedules the plane. If there is space in advance, then schedule it. Or, TALK TO HIM. Tell him your objective and see if you guys can work something out.

I second having your instructors figure it out if that doesn't work.

It takes me about 45 min to drive to the airport... listen to an aviation podcast or something.

It wouldn't be frowned upon at all at most places.... unless you schedule a whole bunch and then cancel on a regular basis. Then your name may end up being 'accidentally' erased.

It certainly is in your instructors best interest to work it out. Was he unwilling to help you out?

Well I haven't had the chance to talk to him. I believe he's instructing the guy though. My instructor is retired and I believe it's a first come first serve kind if deal. So it looks like the best thing to do is talk to the other student or schedule in advance or possibly both

I'm actually right in the middle between four airports...

WHP - 45 min
VNY - 45 min
CMA - 35 min
SZP - 35 min

Yeah- what everyone else has said.

I was having problems getting available airplanes in my training also in the beginning.
That led to me driving just over 40 minutes to a school.
Then next thing you know-that school had renter hit a taxiway sign with a wing-insurance went crazy high $$$$- which prompted next flight school change.
Following that mess-i drove further to next airports for training- sometimes 1.5 hours each way.

But you gotta do what you gotta do.
