WMU is now offering to pay tuition in full of all of their CFI's. This means you could go out and get all of your ratings at a FBO for low cost, get hired as a CFI at WMU and while building time you could go to school and get a 4-year degree in anything you want for FREE!

I'm pretty excited about this as well because this means my last year of college will be free and my last two semesters have been paid through scholarships. I managed to get through a 4-year flying program paying only for flight and a year of tuition. This just shows that not everyone's experience in a 4-year University program is bad.

How long do you think this kind of opportunity is available?
Could I go from PPL to CFI in a year flying full time, and semi-reliably get a job here for college afterwards?

It's hard to say how long this will last. It is pretty much guarenteed though that it will last as long as the regionals keep hiring like they are. What would be really cool is if you get hired with this benefit package you get to keep it as long as you work for WMU. I doubt it works that way though.

I'm not sure if you get AvWeb but they recently ran an article where Mr. Grossman told them instructors were only at WMU for an average of 4-6 months. The turn over rate we have going is incredible. Over Christmas break we lost 4 of our 7 Piper Seneca instructors. You can literally walk in the door with a CFI cert. and they will say sign here. That's it.

I'm debating actually staying at WMU to get a second degree while I build some time just because the pay is better than first year FO pay and they'll pay for me to go to school.

Tell them if they'll pay for my CFI tickets, I'll come instruct in their Senecas for 6 months.

Would you go back to instructing John?

To get a free graduate degree? Heck yeah! Only problem is my girl's job is out here in Utah, so we're not leaving.

And to tell you the truth I enjoyed teaching, and I'm looking forward to being able to do it again.

Hell if they train me from PPL to CFI Ill stay for a good year or two to instruct at least. Probably more if im working on a degree.

FYI, if you're going to Western Michigan and paying out of state tuition for any period of time it's about as expensive as Riddle. Michigan schools are NOT cheap right now in any way.

But if its a 100% Tuition waiver....
What would I be paying?

Should be nothing, but if you were to go to Western as an out of state student and get your private through MEI it'd take you probably 3 years and you'd be paying out of state tuition during that time.

This should be in all schools. You are a school employee and therefore should be able to receive free tuition.

My good friend is the director of security/housing and he gets free tuition, room, & meals. He won't pay a dime for his 4yr degree.

Actually they're getting people their MEIs right now after what happened with our Seneca instructors.

I don't think they'd take someone from the outside though and get them their MEI.
