I know there has been alot of talk about regional airline pilot pay coming out of the Buffalo crash. Sitting on airport reserve the past 2 days has made it quite easy to catch up with the news reports ever 30 mins or so.

On foxnews.com right now (I could care less if you like them or not, leave it out of discussion), front page is the headline "At What Cost: Tragedy Shines Light On Regional Pilot's Low Pay"

Hopefully there is a silver lining to all that has happened with the horrible tragedy.

I know my thoughts and prayers have been with the family of the crews and passangers of Colgan Air Flight 3407.

Here is a quote from the aviation expert? Dont many regionals employ forloughed pilots from the majors and military as well? Im not entirely sure this expert should be the guy speaking on behalf of the industry.

"Yurman added that regional pilots, on the whole, also are not as experienced or talented as large-carrior pilots. Companies like Delta and American Airlines seek pilots with military training, he said, leaving regional carriers to settle for people who are not the "cream of the crop."
"The commuter airlines are getting basically the inexperienced, newly-training pilots," he said. "Then they train them themselves. In most cases, they're getting low-time pilots with very low experience"

I agree with you there, I didn't like the "tone" that is quotes had at all. We all have to start somewhere...we're not "born" with the experience needed to be airline pilot's at Delta, American, United, etc...

We under go far more training than alot of professions, we're constantly on the edge of loosing our ability to earn a living (be it medicals, checkrides, etc), we work long and stress filled hours, and we strive to get the job done on time. I guess it's part of the pilot's personality.

Just because someone comes from the military doesn't mean they're going to be a better pilot than someone who comes from the General Aviation world. I know alot of really great military pilots (and thank you again for serving our country!), but I've also had some that I've given BFR/IPC's for that we're substandard. Same goes for general aviation pilots...some really great ones, some really poor ones.

The fact of the matter is airlines, regional airlines espically, are about the almighty dollar. Right now airlines are cutting back on the number of pilots, putting the pilot's still on staff into situations of flying more legs/hours, and not getting more days off.

I hope I am wrong, but I dont see anything more than a few tongue lashings from some politicians coming out of this.

Management is not going to just go ahead and bump up salaries because of a few bad headlines. Congress may act concerned, but next week, when their constituents have moved on to another issue, so will they.

As someone who is working towards a career as a pro pilot, I wish something would happen. I myself will do my part. I will send letters to politicians. I will stand by my union if they want to strike and I will not work for a company I feel is not being fair to pilots and does not provide the QOL I desire. However, as was mentioned before, for every pilot who turns down a job because of poor work conditions there are 100 more who will sign on the line and keep that company in business.

Its folks like this Yurman guy who incite a witch hunt. The following paragraph was a quote from an ALPA chairman/DL Captain/FORMER REGIONAL PILOT. At least Fox didnt play off of Mr.Yurmans opinion.
